Well this week I start full time online with Simmons. The course work was opened up last week to give students a chance to get started on their assignments, readings, and case studies. I'm in the Cohort 3 (March), and taking 3 classes this term. Advanced Patho, Health Promotion in Nursing, and Nursing Research.
So far for week one there has been quite a bit of reading out of textbooks. The pre-recorded video lectures with power points are really quite awesome if you are an audio/visual learner like myself. Patho has a pre-class quiz, several case studies, and a post class test each week of the term. LOTS of reading! I got a 90% on my pre-class quiz, and my live online class is scheduled for Thursday next week. within 3 days of the live class you have to take your post-class test.
Health promotion seems fairly staight forward, lots of reading (4 chapers in week one alone) but no other assignments due this week, though appears from the syllabus there will be a large health promotion project due towards the latter part of the term. about 1- 1.5 hrs of pre-recorded lecture/video to watch for week one...nothing major.
Nursing Research seems the easiest thus far. 45min pre-recorded lectures, no assignments until about 1/2 way through the term, which will be a large research paper...live class is on Thursday AM for me, not too much in the way of reading. 4 nursing articles but not too long.
So that's my run down of getting started with Simmons this week. I'll try to update more as I've gotten a lot of PM's about the school. I'm just now starting we'll see if I can form coherent thoughts by mid-term =)

Congrats to everyone who got in and good luck to all who are waiting! =) AWESOME! I'm loving class right now, going into week 3 and so far so good. Hold an A in all three of my classes, working full time and being a mommy/wife too. It's pretty tough and takes a lot of dedication and work, but it's well worth it! =) the technology is great, you all will LOVE the online classes, they are amazing!

Hi Tasha,
i am new to the allnurses site, but I have been following and reading your threads. The excitement you show with the FNP program that you are taking has me looking into applying at Simmons for the sept 15th cohort. Can you give me n update of how your classes are going. I am applying for the part time curricula. I am currently working a full time mon-fri 9-5 job. Do u think this is doable during the first terms of the program? Are there a lot of writing assignments required in the program? I don't mind writing papers but I don't want paper writing to be the focus of the program because I don't believe that is a great way of learning for myself. Any other advise you have would be greatly appreciated. Also, congrats for being in the program. Your excitement keeps me encouraged!!!!
Hello! Depending on your organizational skills and time management you should be fine. Will you be doing full time or part time? I worked 3-4 twelves per week, have 3 small kids and did ok the first term full time course load. That being said it was difficult and time consuming! Due to personal reasons I'm now in the part time cohort and took a job working from home M-F. I wanted to finish in 18 mo but I just have to do what's best for my family right now. As far as paper writing there is some short papers in research weekly (2 pages) and a final 6pg paper, quizes and assignments, patho is weekly case studies, quiz and test, and Heath promotion is a few short papers and 1 presentation with paper and on final6 pg paper. No quiz or tests for that class. For all classes lots of reading, the pre recorded lectures with notes and then the live classes are discussions which really help to gel all the info together. I've really learned a lot this first term and it's been incredible compared to my BSN that was all discussion board postings and paper writing weekly!

Then you don't have to :) Congratulations!!! I called student support yesterday because I could not activate my student connection, and they told me May students will not receive their welcome call information and student connection accounts for another week or so. They are working on it, but it is still early! So if you haven't been contacted about that do not worry. Can't wait!!
