sigh...applying

Nursing Students Pre-Nursing

Published

so I'm applying for an accelerated program that starts in June and am REALLY hoping to get in. apps are due Feb 1st, there are 30 spots, and I called the other day to talk to the advisor about the process. she explained to me how they calculate scores for ranking, and then told me they had already selected 10 students from the fall pool! I was totally shocked, so that only leaves 20 spots. well, I freaked, and then calculated my score (11.3 out of 12 -- she told me fall pool went down to about 10.8 or so) and I felt better for about 10 seconds. last night while going over my information I realized I had calculated my GPA for my five science courses (one of three scores they look at)...only to realize they don't use the five science courses, they use three, plus psych and english, not chem or organic chem...well, I took those classes 15 years ago and got B's in them...and got an A in both chem and organic. so my points go down even more to a 10.94. I am so bummed, I know I am going to be right at the cut off, but I feel so discouraged. I also know I should be very thankful that I am pretty much guarenteed a spot in the regular program, but I am looking forward to having another baby asap, and getting on with my life! I just needed to vent a little. and, again, like dh keeps saying, I don't even know, I MAY get in...ah well...

You know, as much as I realize that the things we're learning are important, I find that getting into nursing school is way too competitive for the lack of nurses are country is facing. I'm sure people with the 4.0's are going to beg to differ but all the nurses I have spoken to (including my mother) claim that you only really start learning what nursing is when you begin to work. I have one friend who says he hates when the new grads come and because they graduated with honors and passed NCLEX with flying colors they believe they know everything and he says it is those nurses who aren't really prepared for what nursing is really about. I know not every 4.0-honors-NCLEX-passing-with-high-score nurse is like that, but this is just what I have heard. There really should be other options and criteria for those who have given their all and don't get in.

And don't forget the time invested and the money flushed down the toilet......

there's got to be something out there for us that makes us feel like it wasn't all for nothing :o

You crazy girl. Stop worrying. You will make it in before 2020. One B is NOT going to stop you from getting in. Think positive.

2007..... 2009 Life comes at us FAST, I swear I am running out of time, I'll be 48 this year and you'll be lighting candles on my grave because I will get accepted the day after I die in 2020+....my tombstone will read: "she tried so hard to get into nursing school but that darn B in Chemistry killed her dream and ultimately her......." LOL

Hello everyone!!! I am from Connecticut and just finished applying to 7 schools of nursing and they too are all pretty competetive(the usual-not enough instructors). Just read in the paper that Ct. ranks like 49th for what we are doing about the shortage. Ct turned away 2,000 (!!) QUALIFIED applicants because there is no space for them!!! makes me feel confident!! The sad part is we have a few pharmaceutical and medical companies headquartered in the state but they pour their money into engineering because there is no return on their money for nursing!!!! We even had 2 area hospitals that gave grant money to one of the schools for more instructors and stopped giving money because they had no return on thier money. All about profit..sad. Anyway we need to all be positive and maybe we can help each other through until we start getting our letters...mine wont come until spring!!!! So, hello everyone and good luck!!!!;)

I think it's because CC are cheaper...private schools and universities charge higher tuition.

The reason why the entire universe is applying at our CC nursing program is because they have an examplary ADN program which ranks 6th in the State or so.......

Which CC is that?

San Antonio College.... application deadline for Fall 07 is January 19th. Good luck if you are applying. You'll get in if you have a 4.0. It's crrrrrrazy LOL

applied today....sigh, ;) Everytime I talk to someone things are figured differently...the newest thing is that anyone graduating after 2008 will also be required to take Intro to Sociology. I am glad that I have that class under my belt from a previous degree plan, and that I made an A.(had no idea at that time I would attempt nursing)

I already know that I won't get in for FAll 07 at my CC because I am still short Ethics and Human Growth which I am taking this Spring....there were 1300 applicants last semester for only 150 seats. My B in Chemistry is hurting me :uhoh3: It's just too darn competitive at my CC. B's keep you out.

I ordered a study guide for NET/HOBET so that I can prepare and apply at other schools in our area. At one school I have until June 1 to apply for FAll 07, gotta find out when the test date is. Will be on the phone tomorrow morning. Something will have to work out!

good luck that is great keep us posted!!

I can't even think about applying until all my pre reqs are on my transcript. I will finish this spring so I can finally apply in the fall of 07 for spring 08 start. I only have one option here so hopefully I can get in right away. I am getting too old for all of this LOL

Never too old! :)

I failed from a BSN program with ONE semesterr to go. Mom got sick, and I felt it was my duty to care for her and I fell behind. I woul dhave graduated in May of this year. Imagine my pain and anger when told I would have to wait 3 years to re apply and go through everything again.

I didn't give up. I went to the local CC college and was told that I had JUST made the testing date for the Accelerated ASN by 2 days, and I could try if I wanted to. I thought, why not?

Gave it a shot, took the test, and was notified the next day that I had been accepted!

So I may not graduate in May, and I may not have my BSN right away, but I am good to go, and am surely ready!

I start in March and will graduate in December.

Best of luck to you all in acheiving your dreams...don't ever let anything stand in your way.....

God bless!
