SHSU Fall 2019 (Sam Houston State University)

Published

Hey guys! I didn't see a thread for applicants for Sam Houston State University BSN Fall 2019, so I decided to make one. I am in the process of making my NursingCAS application.

My Stats:

Teas Overall: 86%

  • Math: 93.8%
  • Reading: 85.1%

Overall GPA: 3.5

Pre-Nursing GPA (according to GPA calculator on shsu website) : 3.5

I do have credits from SHSU, and I also took MATH 1370. I am not a licensed CNA, although I did take the course.

Hey I have a question. I am thinking about applying to SHSU for the fall and was wondering if anyone knew how long the nursing program is if I have all prerequisites completed? Thank you!!

2.5 years I believe.

Someone might want to call.... I thought it was 2 years...

Now don’t quote me, but what I heard is there are no more summer classes for the College of Health. So the first semester of Nursing school is only 6 hours (2 classes), no labs and no clinicals. That is Fall 2019 for us. Then there is Spring 2020, Fall 2020, Spring 2021, and the last semester is Fall 2021. They had to tack on another semester because, again, no more summer classes. I have a professor friend in the nutrition department that said the Dean of our college took away summer options which makes our program so much longer. This could be bad intel or old news. If someone finds out, let me know!

Hey guys,

I'm in a dilemma right now. So for some stupid reason I missed my TEAs exam this morning and I was going to use that score to apply. My old scores are in the 70s, nothing less than a 72, and my highest being an 84 in math. Theyre not the best, which is why I was planning on retaking them. I knew for a fact that I would get a higher score bc this time around I actually studied. My GPA however, is absolute *** lol. Its at around a 2.8 ish and barely a 3.0 for science pre reqs. Should I even bother applying? I've heard from quite a few people that SHSU is just as competitive as the other houston schools.

Have you considered retaking some of your pre reques for a higher GPA? I retook a few tbh. You could take some in the summer and fall and apply for spring for a better chance of getting accepted. As sam houston grows in popularity, its becoming more and more competitive. But I wouldnt say its as hard as the Houston schools. People have gotten into sam with 70s on their TEAS scores. As long as your Science and grammar are over 55 and your math and reading are over 75 (i think) you should be eligible to apply. The advisor told me that to be competitive you want above an 80 or 85 for math and science. Also if youre a CNA, EMT, or have a previous BS degree you get extra points added to your application. Sam was one of the main schools I was applying to for Fall 2019, but I already got accepted into another program so I wont be completing the application.

Also! The advisor told me the program was like 2.5 years. Apparently students were really struggling with the program and to better prepare them they are starting off first semester nursing students with only 2 or 3 classes. And then the second semester they get full time. So idk if it goes through summer or if its just an extra semester that is added, but its definitely more than 2 years.

I'm retaking some right now but its only 1 and the rest are going to be during the summer so the timing isnt quite right.

I really needed to poop during the exam so i'm beating myself up becauese I know I wouldve done well lol. as far as my GPa goes, i just really slacked off and there was no one to blame but me.

I would still apply! It depends on the pool of applicants you’re applying with. There is a better chance of getting in if you apply rather than not at all.

According to SHSU's website, here is the curriculum layout for the upper level courses, the actual nursing school. Additionally, I recently attended an information session and they did not mention a fifth semester. They called it a two-year program and are continuously working to streamline the process. I recommend calling and checking this information out for yourself, but according to their website, it is NOT 5 semesters.

Scroll up to semester 2 and you will see 2 lone nursing courses tacked onto that semester. I was told by the advisor that the program is 5 semesters and no summers. But I HOPE that the info session you went to means that it has changed.

I just spoke with the school. The program is 5 semesters, first semester is only 2 classes, and no summer school.

Not to scare anyone, but does anyone know how many applicants vs how many spots there are?
