I tell my instructors information before they ask me about it. For instance, if you're giving furosemide, tell your instructor about your client's BP, serum K, I/O, and any symptoms such as edema, shortness of breath, crackles. Show your instructor that you know what to look up about your patient before he or she asks.
Ask questions after you've looked things up too. Maybe your client is being discharged or is having a procedure done and you either don't agree with what's going on or you're not quite sure why it's happening. Look up their progress notes, history, labs, and tests; tell your instructor what you know, what you can deduce from what you know, and then ask your instructor for input. Even if you're wrong about something, this at least show your instructor that the wheels are turning.
What are your views on critical thinking? Why do you think it's important for nurses to be more than providers' puppets?
Prioritization is also a form of critical thinking. If you are taking on multiple patients, or even 2, which will you see first? You client needs a finger stick, prandial insulin, an inhaler, oral potassium, and assistance with feeding. Which will you do first? Is there anything you can delegate?
