Should I take a patient tech position at dream facility?

Hello All,

I'm a fairly recent grad working at a small psychiatric facility. I've been here less than a year. My passion is all things brain-related and I came across an opening for a PCT at a world-class facility here in my hometown. This organization is cutting-edge and I would be more than willing to accept the pay cut just to get a foot in the door and to be at the gold-standard for neuro care. My question is, do any of you think they would consider me for hire? Also, is this a path to a nursing job, or would I forever be seen as "just a tech." IMHO, the techs are the ones who keep everything running, but I have encountered some negative attitudes from nurses and docs.

I would explore your questions at an interview for the position, or alternatively an informational interview. No better way to find out if this could be what you want than to get your answer from the horse’s mouth.

Thank you. I did apply; just waiting to hear back.

Are you a nurse? If so, no. You should not take a job as a PCT. Have you applied for RN positions? You should focus on RN jobs. If unable to land a RN position there, apply else where, work a year or two and try again after you have some experience.

Some tech jobs will not hire a nurse for the position. Just remember though, if you are hired as a tech and not oriented as a nurse, you are still held accountable for anything nursing, without the compensation. Not hardly worth it, IMHO. If they do wish to interview, perhaps they can give a heads up towards possible future nursing positions

Hey All,

Thanks for the replies. Quick update. I did apply and they interviewed me for a nurse job which hadn't yet been posted, and...I got it. This is my dream job at my dream hospital so I'm absolutely thrilled.
