Should I take Chem, API, and Micro in same semester?

I am just starting my prereq's...and was wondering if I am totally insane to try to take Chem, Micro and API in the same semester..why would I consider something this crazy?..because If I complete all of my pre classes before Sept.09 I would be entered into a PRIORITY admission to my community colleges "ACCLERATED 13 month RN program." The only way I can make that deadline is to take CHEM, MICRO and API together in Spring and then take APII, STATS and SOCI I in SUMMER

I am 42 years old, my kids are at the end of HS and are very independant and supportive. I am not working and don't have to work for two years, my husband is great...so, I don't have pressures that most people have....HOWEVER, I have not been in school for 20 years. I do have a BS in Public Policy and my GPA was always around a 3.5....BUT I never took MATH classes beyond a C in Algebra, and I only took BIOL 101....I do love human body stuff and nutrition and am excited about A&P and MICRO...but I am dreading CHEM and STATs because it is not my strong suit...math is scary for me.

SO, should I just relax take the classes and go for good solid A's in my classes or try to cram these classes in as short a period as possible to get the GPA EDGE for getting a seat in this competitive program? Any thoughts are greatly appreciated

So, The reoccurring theme here is BE CAREFUL! You had biology 20 years ago and that will hurt with micro and A&P I. Google "citric acid cycle" and take a peek.

I think the schedule you have planned out would bury me, but you're not me. :nuke:

Oh...NO...you didn't bring up the Kreb's Cycle...that one alone literally destroyed me. I am still trying to understand it, just because it gets to me that I never really got it in school. I just remember memorizing the words, and was fortunate enough to only get three questions on it for my final in Anatomy 2. When I got it again in Micro, I was fortunate again...the professor threw away one exam-the lowest score and guess what... to the circular file it went.

I am the sort of person that not only likes to memorize, but to comprehend. The Kreb's cycle is important to understanding some of the metabolic disorders, so, it sort of haunts me. It does not have to be emphasized during my daily life as a nurse, but for my own sanity, I do plan to get someone to explain it to me simply. I didn't have the same tutor when I took those courses that I did when I got into nursing and beyond, but to this day, I wish I can sit with that excellent tutor that carried me through nursing so that I can pick his brain.

This gentleman (my tutor) was a physician in his own country (Mexico) and came to the USA in attempt to practice here. He was a tutor in the lab and he took a great deal of time with me. He has an uncanny way to bring the most complicated into a simple story that stayed with you for life. I actually got acquainted with him during my short stint in chemistry (before I dropped the class). Had I not had to take off 4 days from chemistry for the orientation for the LPN program, I probably could have at least eeked a B out of chemistry. We developed such a great relationship that he tutored me throughout the entire nursing program, helping me to apply the lessons of anatomy and physiology, micro and pharmacology, plus gave me critical thinking skills. Since I graduated, he became an A&P and biology professor and continues to take classes while preparing for his MD boards here in the United States. He sends me emails every now and then, and just a few weeks ago, he sent me an ecard for Xmas, asking me if there is anything I want to review in anatomy. He even offered me a chance to sit and audit his classes! The first thing that I shouted out in my return email is to tell me the date he plans to speak on the Kreb's Cycle in his classroom! So, a few years late, I will finally comprehend it!:w00t:. Kreb's cycle, to me, is just one of those things that continues to haunt me after school, sort of like Post Traumatic Stress Syndrome...

The Krebs cycle was always my enemy

I had it the second month or so in A&P I. It was a herd thinner as we lost about 10 people after that test.

I learned it and forgot at least 80% of it by now. Do you see what I mean about being away from biology for 20 years and walking into that?

I agree with NYDreamer...I did these 3 classes and got A's. I think it helped me get into the ABSN program as it was very competitive. I even subtly pointed it out in my essay. I think they may look at the fact that if you can do it and get A's, then you can probably handle the ABSN program. I haven't started my program yet, but I'm expecting it to be much harder and more intense than the semester I did A&PI, Micro, and Chem. But, how I would love to be pleasantly surprised and find out it's not!!

PLEASE don't tell me that the Kreb's cycle will ever come back to haunt me!!!

I think I will go as the Kreb's cycle next halloween. :msk:

I just love this site...it has helped me so much, thanx to everyone for the advice...its so cool to have people a click away that understand what you are going through...since none of my friends have any clue what I am talking about. Most think I am out of my mind to be going back to school..HA!

I am waffeling back and forth every other minute it seems....I really wish classes would start so that I would just stop obsessing over the whole thing. I have no idea how I will do in these types of classes to begin with, since I spent my first college career in psych and public policy classes. I am a bit nervous over the math, just because I hated it as a young girl, and never put much effort into it. Even though I am looking forward to the sciences I have no real idea how I will do in those either. I am very strong in writing and analyzing, but I have no idea how I'll do with the MASSIVE AMOUNTS of ROTE memorization (the hip bone's connected to the thigh bone....Heehee).

To answer a few peoples questions...I got cleared on all the Prereqs for MICRO, AP, CHEM etc because I already have a BS degree and since 'old farts' like me tend to do really well in school they figure we have the right to try without having to go back to the begining.

I don't have to work, and my family is really cool, so no problems there. BUT the competition to get into these programs is insane so I wanted to get these done to get priority consideration. However my husband thinks I should just take it easy and enjoy the process, and I agree that if you cram too much stuff in at one time, just to get through you CAN miss a great opportunity to learn.

I HAVE MULTIPLE-CHOICE QUESTION anxiety....I made A's on every single essay exam I had in college, but MULTIPLE-CHOICE always freaked me out, because I over analyze s**t all the time, and I think they are trying to trick me...so I will be visiting the help center to deal with that anxiety.

I didn't know you could CLEP SOCI 101...that sounds like a possibility...I'll have to check that? Although the class is offered as computer/video/self paced class, that would probably be easy too!

However, someone did make an interesting comment...."going through NS is LIKE taking MICRO, CHEM and AP together EVERY semester anyway"...sounds like we are in for alot of FUN!

Go for it!!!! I'm sure you can do it! If you feel overwhelmed why don't you take Gen Chem May term. I am actually taking it winter term right now at the community college and it started Dec 12th and it ends Jan 16th and I am making an A! I am on my holiday break for a week so May term is about 3 weeks a little shorter. My classes start at UTA Jan 20th so I'll be finished just in time for spring term. Im glad I am taking it now rather than a whole semester.

I took Micro, Physiology & Chem in the same semester along with a Gen Ed course and got all As..

WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOW! That is amazing!!:yeah:

ETA: I was very cranky that semester
LOL! :chuckle

Now...that is low...VERY low! And if you knock on the doors of nurses or nursing students, you may get a trick instead of a treat-especially if you come to mine...:yeah::p

Part of why I hated school so much is that I didn't get a chance to ENJOY the experience, to soak in all of this interesting information and apply it properly. I felt rushed, pressured and anxious the entire time. I spent more time memorizing to pass the test rather than to comprehend the processes, which lead to a disadvantage for me. With the brutal, competitiveness involved, I found that I purposely segregated myself from the crowd because we all looked at each other as potential enemies, and for me, it was a bit safer and brought me more peace of mind to remain in solitude.

Sometimes, these things may depend on the presentation of the professors, the personal aptitude of the student and outside influences such as family and other commitments. I was very careful in organizing what classes I took and when to give myself the best advantage possible because I was granted a leave with full salary and tuition pay to attend school. I had no time to waste, because I didn't have the money to pay for this myself. Strategic planning had to take place in order to assure that I obtained a seat in this program. One has to force their mind to work at it's highest level and do so quickly.

Again, only you know what is best. I just advise to think carefully, calculate the risk and know what you can handle.
