HI GUYS. JUST JOINED. I AM CURRENTLY A SINGLE MOTHER AND WOULD LIKE TO ENROLL IN A NURSING PROGRAM NEXT MONTH. I AM NOT TOO FAMILIAR WITH MOST MEDICAL TERMS AND I AM KINDA SCARED. I HAVE 2 FRIENDS THAT ARE ENROLLED IN PROGRAMS AND I MUST ADMIT THAT THEIR PAY IS NOT VERY WELL IN OKLAHOMA. I LIVE ONLY 24 MINS. AWAY FROM TX BORDER. SHOULD I GO AHEAD AND ENROLL AND PRAY FOR A JOB ACROSS THE BORDER? MY DREAM HAS ALWAYS BEEN TO BECOME A NURSE AND RIGHT NOW IT'S IN MY HEART MORE THAN EVER. I WANT IT SO BAD, BUT WILL IT SUPPORT MY FAMILY?:uhoh21:

I personally find nursing very rewarding. Both financially and emotionally. There are many many areas of nursing so the possibilities are endless.

You are taught medical terms in school so that you dont have to worry about. I would say go for it if it is something that you really want to do.

Welcome!!! You will find all kinds of support here. Lots of people enroll without knowing terms, you will learn them. Don't be afraid!

That said, could I ask you not to type in all caps? It's kinda hard on the eyes, and in internet etiquette it's considered "shouting."

hi, mayty_20!

i really can't address the issue of jobs in oklahoma or texas, but i can tell you about websites for information about nursing and medical terminology that you should explore.

you should also check out the nursing student forums on allnurses by click on the "students" tab above. you will find plenty of support there and lots of advice from other students.

welcome to allnurses! :welcome:

mayty, if you can do it without stretching financial and family commitments to beyond what you consider to be the limit, and you want it, then [color=plum]do it. enrol. would it be an idea to enrol in a course in both states and see where you are accepted? leave your options open and go for it. and hey, if we are scaring you with the medical terms, don't worry, as everyone says here, you will be taught them. 'k? go for it!

It won't put you in the expensive area of town with a big SUV and a speed boat out front but it will sure beat what you make at Mcdonald's. Don't go into nursing expecting to make a ton of money and you won't be disappointed.

Go for it girl!! There are a lot of job opportunities in nursing. There is always room to grow, specialize, etc. I'm an RN in north Texas. I started at $19 right out of school...and recieved a decent raise after my first year. Plus, there are shift differentials at the hospital I work at (after 3pm, nights, weekends). The hospital I work at is in Ft. Worth....I live in Wise County and the hospitals in the smaller towns north of the metroplex, the pay is lower.

I am going back to school to specialize, but I feel that I can be completely self-sufficient where I am right now.

Welcome. What makes you want to be a nurse? I ask because maybe you will get a clearer picture of yourself and your aptitudes if you explore this a little.

The pay isn't great but it's livable. OT, PT, ST probably all pay more, maybe X Ray tech and sonographer, too.

Best wishes.

I love nursing. It has given me a comfortable living, I am able to get the things that I need, have some extra, and not worry about money. Nursing is a good, flexible career option.

Welcome to allnurses. Good luck making a decision as to what to do!

Nursing is a rewarding career in many areas. While I may not make the pay scale of higher ups, it has given me a comfortable life and allowed me to pursue even higher education while not breaking my bank. If nursing is in your heart and you truly have the desire, go for it, you'll be thankful in many ways that you did.
