Should I just move on?

Published

I recently took a job at my local hospital. I was told by HR that I needed a certain type of CPR. The courses on the list that I was given were either full until middle of September; the course did not meet the hospital's requirements; or accreditation was lost. I left two messages each for HR & the nurse recruiter regarding this--beginning last Thursday. The recruiter told me that the course is offered every Friday for $20, but she did not remember where this was. That has NOT been true. The cost has ranged from $40-$85 & the place that offered it every Friday has lost accreditation. HR told me the course is offered at the hospital, but since I am not technically an employee, I cannot take it.

I just happened to be speaking with the Employee Health Nurse regarding my physical & thought I would ask her if she had any idea of who I could speak with regarding my concerns. She sent me to the nurse recruiter's boss. I talked with this person who seemed very nice. She suggested that I try 3 other hospitals to see if they offer the course for non-employees. She then told me to call her again if I had any problems getting a CPR course. Well...I did have a problem & left her a message saying so 3 days ago. At the same time, I left another message for the nurse recruiter. NEITHER has returned my call. I know these people are busy, probably more than I could ever imagine. But I also get the feeling that they listen to messages & decide which they want to return & it just never happens to be mine. I called my soon-to-be unit manager yesterday & she never called me back. I'm giving her one more chance before I move on. My husband thinks I should just look for another job. But he also says that if I decide that I want to remain in this hospital, not to "Piss off too many people." Hmmm...What do you guys think? Stay there or move on?

It seems that pie123 and wanna-b-rn are not RNs yet. This might be the reaso you are being treated this way. Some places will not "bend-over-backwards" if you are not an RN yet. Unfortunatly this happens all the time. Fortunately at my hospital it doesn't happen. We have a very well organized Education department which does everything to keep ALL employees current in their certs. Notices are sent out to department heads that lists employees that need CPR, ACLS or whatever. It is unfortunate that the place you want to work at is less co-operative. Maybe look somewhere else because they obviously don't care hwether you work for them or not. Mike

I am an RN.

Hey Pie,

I am pretty sure I live in the same city as you and just experienced the same problem with getting a CPR class with AED. The class I took at Arrowhead Hospital did not have AED included, (though it was for health care providers). This is not a problem for employment but school for me.

You didn't say what hospital you had a problem with, but, I went through the hiring process at Banner Good Sam in less than a week for an LPN extern job. No jacking around at all and they ACTIVELY recruited me though I still have one semester left to my ADN program. They also have nursing magnent status now. You might want to check it out. If you fill out the application online they will be calling Monday! :)

"should I move on?"

it would seem really, really wise to consider it. you are not yet even employed there and look already, how lousy your treatment has been.

I think it would be wise to think twice, myself.

I'm a nursing student, had to have BLS with AED for school and recertify each year. I've had no problem finding places that offer it (almost any Red Cross), as long as I had enough notice. Most recently, I just ended up taking the "challenge test", which involves passing the certification--written and hands-on. I was offered the opportunity to look over the material prior to taking the test. Since I only had 2 weeks notice and my clinicals interfered with the only classes w/openings, I did it. In this area, I believe that one must have the certification to gain employment as an RN, then the employer provides refreshers at no cost to employees. But it's in our own best interest to stay on top of when the certification expires so as not to get in a bind. I'm not disputing that you should have been treated better, just that a little preventive medicine goes a long way when dealing with overworked and/or unreliable people.

I was on top of certification. I had BCLS. However, at this hospital, AED is also required. I just took the course today.

Pie123,

I'm glad you were finally able to get the AED class you needed.

Are you still going to take the job at that hospital? It sounds like you had a terrible time dealling with them.

Good nurses deserve better!!

No, I'm not. The recruiter never called me back. My mother-in-law saw her last Thursday & the recruiter asked if I was related to her. Then, she had the nerve to tell my MIL that she was, "So happy" that I was going to be working for them. Apparently not happy enough to call me back. Thanks for your support.

Rather amazing how in today's healthcare environment everyone is strongly encouraged to go above and beyond for their "customers"--------except when that "customer" is a nurse.

Now that the original poster has completed a course which includes AED instruction, it should be abundantly clear to her just how little the organization cared about recruiting. They saved $60 bucks but because they wouldn't teach something a layperson could learn in 10 minutes they lost an otherwise successful applicant.

I am rather critical of healthcare management/administration in general. I truly wish that were not the case. But unfortunately, in case after case they create obstacles for care providers.

now that is definately an interesting perspective. It is funny how everyone is NURSING's customer, but no one treats US as such when we are seeking help/services. I can point to less-than-stellar HR departments where they are too busy doing bake sales or out eating cake for Employee of the Year or something to even be reached when I need something.......(like an answer as to whether my resume was received or trashed)

or when I needed a TB skin test read and our ED told me to "come back later" cause they were "busy"----- (hmmm no ambulances in the bay whatsoever, nobody waiting in the waiting room, and laughter and good times obviously being had in the back, from what I could hear)....yes, seems customer service is not extended to the nurses so drilled in its principles, is it?

I still say a place treating a nurse like this PRIOR to employment is NOT promising as an employer. Not by a long shot. They are not even TRYING to "put on their best" for a potential employee. Gives me shivers to think how they must treat their current employees whom they don't have to "lure". Seems to me, you don't have a lot to look forward to from here. :uhoh21:
