Should I or should I not?

I was recently hired into a care center through the hospital where I live. It will be my first CNA job. Full time/benefits/discount at the fitness center/ and they are starting me out at 9.43/hr. Not the greatest, but- it's better than the 7.25/hr I'm getting at my retail job right now. Once I was offered the position- I found out from everyone around me that I shouldn't work there because it's a terrible place and no one likes it there. I've heard this from several people who used to work there.

I recently had an interview about a week ago with a health center that offers 14.75/hr for CNA's. I have yet to hear anything from them, so I'm not sure what to think. I would love to work there. I've heard such great things about the place. The only thing is, is that it's a half hour away & I would have to bid for a full time position & the wait for a full time position is 3-4 months. So it would only be part time. Which means no benefits.

Question is-I'm not sure what I should do? Should I take this job at the care center? Ask them if there is an opening in the hospital itself, instead? or should I wait and see what happens with this other health center? I would like someone else's opinion on the matter!

How did you feel when you interviewed at the "bad place"? Did you feel comfortable? Sometimes you have to go with your own gut instead of what everyone else tells you; some just love to scare others.

I currently work at a facility that does not have the most stellar reputation in the medical community, but it's not as bad as everyone else makes it out to be. You've got to test the waters for yourself before you come to the conclusion that the place is really "good" or "horrible."

One person's hellhole is another person's castle.

I say take the job for 9.47/hr its full time and you get a discount on a gym membership. I wish I was in your shoes I wouldn't be debating about it,lol. In reality 9.47/hr isnt bad for a new grad as a CNA. I just graduated too and hoping to find something around 9.50/hr. But, I have heard many jobs from 8.50-9.00/hr. I mean gosh I was making more than that in a warehouse. So like I said before I would take it. The 14/hr sounds nice but its part time and far from your house. So in the long run you would do better with the 9.47 gas is killer. And partime jobs don't bring good job security. And people always talk about places not being a good place to work. You have to see for yourself to really know. Take a chance!

Take the 9.43 hr. job with the good bennies that is closer to home.

Thank you all so much!

The Commuter-you are right..

Ones hellhole is anothers castle.

I definitely agree with that. Let's just hope it's a castle for me! haha

look at it this way ...

if you take the job at the care center, you will be working full time, closer to home (less gas expense), with benefits and after probationary period (or one year) you might be accruing vacation/sick/personal time. don't ask just yet if there is an opening in the hospital, get some experience under your belt first (i'd say about six months), then apply for a position at the hospital. they might even have a tuition assistance program for your future education.

you haven't heard from the health center, the position is half hour away (more gas expense), part time, no benefits (if you need medical/dental/vision coverage, do you know what that would cost out of your pocket?). you would have to bid for a full time position (how many others may be bidding for that position, too) and the wait for a full time position is 3-4 months (that's just an estimate, could be 3-4 months or a lot longer).

i work at a ltc facility that on most days/evening shifts has a 1:10 cna/resident ratio. i have heard that other facilities pay better. some of the cnas have left for more money and have returned. the other facilities did not have sufficient supplies or the cna/resident ratio was 1:12 or higher.

i, too, would say to take the job for 9.47/hr. if it doesn't work out you could reapply at the health center.

Does everyone else have insiders info as to why people don't like it or are they going on just rumors.

Just because others don't like working someplace doesn't mean that you will dislike it. Go for it and go into it with an open mind.

This is a fact in most occupations. We all have to start somewhere right? Are you looking for a career or just to get your feet wet and move on to something else? Remember, that life, and most things in life, are what you make it. You could always look to see if the "Bad Place" has any violations when it comes to OSHA, JC, ect...
