Thought I would start a new thread. I want to know what is the shortest time that any RN has taken to emigrate from UK to the USA? And there are a few of us on here who are starting off or who are on the long road and some nearing the end, and it would be nice to get an average length of time.
For the record most of you know I am going via an agency (cause I didnt find this web site til after I took nclex)
I joined the agency 1st August 2004.
I took my NCLEX 17th january 2005,
Visa screen approved end April 2005
Medical 29th October
Interview US embassy 16th November 2005
Arrived in US 1st Dec 2005
My papers were filed for visa screen and green card last day of January 2005.
It would also help others who are following in our footsteps :balloons:
now, i was told you can bring more than that, you just dont need to declare 10000, anything over that you have to and it is per family not per person!i think i will look into this a bit more, this is the trouble, there is so much conflicting advice that sometimes its hard to work out what is true!
There are notices at the airport which tell you you cannot bring more than $10000 in cash into the US, you have to be aware every country is worried about money laundering.
It is not that expensive to transfer money, Nat west charge around 25 pounds. You must check re if you all come together as a family if you are allowed $10000 each, I cant answer that one.
It is per family,
we brought in a cheque made out to us for $15,000 last year (insurance claim on villa, new roof)
We went through the red channel and declared it with no problem.
If you want to change large amounts of money to get the best rates register with
01753 859 159
or
020 7823 7500
We have an account with both it does not cost anything
(We have a family viewing our house over the weekend fingers crossed to us, not much time now to sell)

yes you need to declare over 10000 if they find you are carrying more they have the legal right to confiscate the lot!!! you dont get penalised for bringing more you just need to inform them.if you are bringing under 10000 you dont need to bother, i checked on the us customs site today as this thread made me think abit
the currency transfer site are quite good as you seem to get a 10 cent per pound better exchange rate, which adds up to alot if you have the proceeds of a house sale to bring with you.
my fingers are crossed for you ann, see you around on the other forum xx

It is so cheap to transfer money via banks or paypal
I was just going to put my money in the bank I have here with internet banking & transfer it to myself once we have a us account. I was told that should be possible by the HSBC.
thats not a bad idea at all, i havent looked at this possibility, but i had thought about using paypal as madwife suggests.
by the way i was told if you bring it in a cheque it can take a long time to clear (up to 28 days) if it is being put into a new account something to do with money laundering i think
so bring cash too folks.
Nationwide is the only bank UK that I am aware of that if you have a debit card do not charge you in the US for using an ATM. All the others have a standing charge. We have just opened an account for this reason.
Also have Amercian Express card so we can transfer when we arrive to give a small start to credit rating.
We have just drawn a US$ cheque today from my sons Halifax account and they charged us £10 but the rate was not as good as Monycorp etc.
but he wanted to grown up and do it himself. He is 14 1/2 and bought his first car for $900 when we were over a couple of weeks ago. He is so excited about being able to drive with a learner permit Dec this year.

Good suggestions, we found that if you need to send money home to the UK one of the best ways is by paypal.
Yes here is the link to do the transfer.
I have been spending on mine like mad for about 6 months and always paying it off. I do not know if that is the right thing to do.
