Thought I would start a new thread. I want to know what is the shortest time that any RN has taken to emigrate from UK to the USA? And there are a few of us on here who are starting off or who are on the long road and some nearing the end, and it would be nice to get an average length of time.
For the record most of you know I am going via an agency (cause I didnt find this web site til after I took nclex)
I joined the agency 1st August 2004.
I took my NCLEX 17th january 2005,
Visa screen approved end April 2005
Medical 29th October
Interview US embassy 16th November 2005
Arrived in US 1st Dec 2005
My papers were filed for visa screen and green card last day of January 2005.
It would also help others who are following in our footsteps :balloons:
You open an American Express card account in the UK, When you come to the US you phone up the Amercan Express here and say you have come from the UK and that you have a card in the UK and they will open an account for you over the phone for the US.
YOu will not get any other credit card account over here, unless you used OGP for a Bank of America card. They will give you a package that helps buy a car and apoen a bank account.
We have been here almost 8 months and we still cant get credit and we have done everything you should. Paid rent, paid bills, apid everything and I mean everything on time.
Bills for hot Az are as follows all are very average but give you an idea.
Rent $1200 aprox
APS= Elec $250 per month ( air con) winter $70
Gas $60 per month
Water $60 per months
Trash $100 per six months
Car insurance $150 per month for one car
Renters insurance $15
Gas/petrol $60 per tank
Remember these are mine for a 4 person family
Just while we are on this subject.
DO NOT CLOSE any UK bank accounts you have before you move to the US.
You are able to keep them running but will not be able to open any new ones once you leave for the US.
Much better interest rates if you have any spare cash or UK income and dont forget you can withdraw from an ATM in US with Nationwide debit card with no charges and a good exchage rate.
right this is my little plan lol
i have a small pension in the uk only about £100 per month, i thought i would leave it running in the uk as it gets paid into the bank and link the account to my paypal along with my new (not got yet) usa account and transfer the money in and out via that if i need it at all
im hoping to try to get a car from international autosource and i will probably take the ogp card just to get going with my credit history
how does that sound?

How does this compare to your Uk cost of living? if you don't mind me asking. IE nhs salary & outgoings to Us salary & outgoings, is it about the same, better or are you worse off in general. I know that you personaly have had problems with your job (re accident) but had you maintained a regular income would you have been in a better financial situation or is it just a better way of life situation?
How are you now by the way are you back to health yet? any plans to go back to work? I do hope things have improved for you.

When you first get here you compare the pound and the dollar and you think great we live here so cheap. When you live here for a few more months you think in dollars and dont compare so things can appear expensive. Realistically it is cheaper to live here but not as cheap as you would imagine.
I earn't less here than the UK. Car insurance, electricity, water and gas are much more expensive here. Grocerys and eating out are much cheaper in the US, you can buy cheap clothes and shoes here but you can also buy more expensive clothes. Child care can be as expensive if not more.
Electrical goods seem to break down more often, I cant tell you how often we have changed DVD players.
Medical expences are beyond your imagination. No matter how much medical insurance you pay or is paid for you you will still contribute towards your medical expences. Even to buy paracetamol it about 5 times more.
In answer to your question re working It has now been discovered that I have a broken vertabrae in my back and I am waiting to see the surgeon, so no I am unable to work yet.
I have to add I have been left here abandoned with no care if I have enough money even to eat by the people who brought me over here.
