Shopping online

I just found out I will be starting nursing school in August and I am ready to shop! We have school scrubs we must wear, however, there are lots of accessories I will need (or want) like a watch, stethoscope, books, etc. What is your favorite online shopping site for nursing stuff? What accessories do you like and is there any gadget or accessory that you can't live without?

Thank you!

One word:

http://www.amazon.com

(well, maybe it doesn't count as one word)

It has everything I could ever want or need! Best accessory ever: stethoscope hip clip. It's a great alternative to laying the stethoscope around your neck.

amazon.com or bn.com for the books.

allheart.com for the steth and other nursing gear.

WalMart for anything not covered by either one (such as the rolling backpack and white undergarments).

I got a 10-pack of penlights on ebay for around 6 bucks. Be careful when you get your books online. I ordered an expensive book, and later found out that my school bookstore was packaging software with the new books. Good luck to you now!

I was always curious about this and since you mentioned it, what is the deal with everyone having those? I am starting my Nursing program in May but at the Community College I was doing my pre-reqs at, almost all the Nursing students had them.

my advice don't bother paying for an expensive watch. Get a $6 or 7 at walmart that you can wipe off. Its bound to get some of anything on it! That way you won't be to upset if something happens to it. Good luck with school!

Start totting around 2,3 or more of those nursing books and you will find out quickly. Just make sure you get and adult one not kid sized. Actually I got one my first semester doing co-reqs since I had to take all my A&P books with me to another class due to the logistics of it all.

Loved my rolling backpack. One girl in my class took a plastic milk crate and bungie corded it to one of those suitcase roller thingies, LOL but then again we were in redneck country.

Scissors and hemostats for stubborn caps of various kinds. They make some nice lightweight, but hefty scissors, able to cut through dressings easily.

I have this really cool gadget that I found at a uniform store. It's stainless steel and looks like a hemostat but it's a 3:1 tool. It has scissors, hemostats and a curved inside to wrap around luer locks and so you can twist stubborn ones off. I love that thing!!:p

Stethascope is a given. They make some out there with really neat heads, called ultrascopes. You can customize your scope with head color/design and also tube color. Nobody will run off with your scope without your knowing it.:yeah:

Rolling backpacks were not quite the in thing when I went to school. I carried my books in my regular backpack and developed continuous back pain quite quickly and had to see a physical therapist. She nixed the book carrying as well as told me to stay out of my car because of the forward facing neck rest. I actually had to drop out of school that term because of the whole matter, not a pleasant situation at the time.

Agreed. The first class, I tried carrying those heavy nursing textbooks around in a regular backpack...and I walked sideways. Second class, I tried a messenger bag...you think I'd have figured out it would have the same result, but don't we usually miss the obvious? :)

So after I experienced enough pain, I got a rolling briefcase at WalMart for about $20. It made life SO much easier and comfortable! Go to their luggage section--you can find them there. And if you're lucky, after two years of nursing school abuse the bag will still be serviceable enough for you to use as regular luggage.
