I am watching FOXNews and they just reported they have received a "bulletin" about a shooting at a nursing college in Tuscon. They will break in more more news as they get it. Two women have been shot...No word on condition...I hope they are not seriously wounded.
My prayers are with them.
Interestingly enough, Webster online had a deffinition. Here tis:
to burst or break out violently or passionately
and so... around here psychnurse.. it can also mean ganging up on, personally attacking, and screwing up the conversation to make it personal... again.. detracting from any possiblitiy to embrace oppourtunities to create change...
psychnurse... now why would people do that? I think it is because they have VERY NARROW perspectives... what a luxury... on this end of viewing and trying to intelligently talk about issues.

I think all of us could agree that the killings were unjustified and horrible.
I think we could also agree that the killer was a self-centered person who was extremely depressed.
It is of no doubt that this letter has brought to light many issues that have existed in nursing programs for a long time, but have not actively been addressed.
Bullying does exist. People with poor coping skills exist. Homocidal people exist. Suicidal people exist.
If we continue to ignore the existence of these things, shootings like these will continue to exist.

Webster online states, in the deffinition of EMPATHY:
the action of understanding, being aware of, being sensitive to, and vicariously experiencing the feelings, thoughts, and experience of another of either the past or present without having the feelings, thoughts, and experience fully communicated in an objectively explicit manner; also : the capacity for this
This term came up a lot in nursing school... and continues to do so in the real world... I hope we all are able to embrace it in one form or another.... sometimes we need to step back to do this.. to not make it "personal"..
I try to embrace empathy as a learning tool. I do not need to justify anything I have said as biased against one subject over another... that would be ignorant to do so....
I have attempted to rally my colleagues to see a picture that I and others were struck with. It does not mean I agree with it. That is the gist of what true empathy for the patient, victims, and perpetrators is all about (IMHO).

I would read a letter from the victims with the same empathy...
It is a terribly sad happening... a date that will be immortalized...
Let's learn from it and move on....
