I highly reccomend the brand SAS. I have very high arches and if I do a lot of walking in anything other than my SAS shoes I get a sharp pain up the middle of my foot so bad that I can't walk. I am overweight and out of shape, and doing clinicals this semester in my SAS shoes was a life saver. My fellow students would be hobbling at the end of the day complaining about how bad their feet hurt. Even though I am heavy, my feet were tired at the end of the day but there was no pain. They are expensive, I paid about $150 for mine (white leather also), but worth every penny.
If you're not accustomed to being on your feet for hours at a time, you might also benefit from having a fitting at a high quality athletic shoe store (there are local chains and national chains like New Balance) or at a store that sells orthotic/diabetic/professional shoes so they can identify any previously unknown foot issues (like over-pronation). Being on your feet all day can really exacerbate a previously unknown problem in ways that can almost be crippling.
I read up on Danskos and was prepared to by a pair, but then I saw some customer reviews on Amazon.com. Apparently, a Danish company, Sanita, used to make Dansko's shoes for them (contracted manufacturer, I guess). Dankso became popular for their quality while Sanita was making their shoes. Within the past couple of years, Dansko and Sanita parted company. Some of the reviews I saw about Dansko shoes indicated that since Sanita stopped making Danskos, the Dansko quality isn't what it used to be. With that said, I purchased a pair of Sanitas in preparation for nursing school/clinicals (I begin this fall). I've walked around in them, and so far, they seem to have great arch support and are very comfortable.
I started out with K-Swiss sneakers which I had for about a year. After awhile, they caused my lower back to hurt while I was working. Then I got New Balance sneakers which I had for two years. Had the same problem with my back.
The only shoes that I've found that don't cause my back to hurt- after more than a year of use- are Sketcher's Shape Ups. After I got used to the initial rocking motion, I've found them very comfortable. They are starting to get a little worn out, and I'm buying another pair to replace them.

Would any of you current nursing students mind sharing your recommendations for comfortable shoes? I start my program in the fall...I did some research, but wanted to get some more feedback from those who are in the midst of their nursing school careers (: Thanks!
