I'm a senior nursing student about to go into my preceptor in one of the local Trauma I EDs. (This is also where I want to work when I graduate) For Christmas, I need a really good pair of shoes. I'm almost 22 and have already had 2 knee surgeries. Any suggestions? I have been wearing nike tennis shoes and after 8 hours my back, legs and heels are in a fair amount of pain. Any suggestions on a good shoe that will stand up 12+ hours?

I have tried several different shoes - anywhere clogs, crocs -- but I still prefer my good ol Nike shox. I know that they are a little bit more expensive but if I can run 3 miles, workout, etc - then they can take the beating of a 12 hour shift in my busy ER. I like that I can throw em in the washer (shhh dont tell the Nike folks) and then air dry em. Try ebay - good shoes for lots cheaper! Good luck!!

I started wearing crocs this past year, and that's all I wear now, even when I'm off duty.

dansko clogs

no leg pain, no foot pain

comfortable

I currently swap between 2 pairs of shoes - New Balance MW811

and Danskos - I find both very supportive.

By the way, I would recommend the following website for a really good range of different brands and styles of nurses shoes for both men and women. You're sure to fin something that works.

Have you asked your ortho to recommend a brand of shoe. It would seem logical since he/she would have some suggestions. I wear New Balance walking shoes...12 hour shifts x 4 days. I am a psych nurse who works with adolescents and you want something that won't slide off and provides good arch support....not to mention they are great when we have to take off down the hall at a full run sometimes. I've tried different brands but come back to either the NB or Nike's.....

What about birkenstocks? At the hospital here, birkenstocks are all the rage. My mom bought me some for graduation, I cant wait until they get here to try them out.

Anybody on here have experience with Mephisto walking shoes? I remember trying on a pair... egads, more than 10 years ago and they were possibly the most comfortable shoes I'd ever tried. However, they were far outside my price range at the time.

I fourth the CROCs. They are great. Not the prettiest shoe but who cares during the 12th hour. I've spent hundreds of dollars on Dansko's. I got my CROC's for less than $30 and I love them. . . Good luck in the ED!:p

Hello,

I am a converter to Danskos.

I have a high instep so must use their pita style.

The shoes are made to take some use. I am also a marathon runner and am an avid believer in retiring worn out or useless shoes! If your tennies are not cutting it for eight hours, then the next day they are even worse off. Throw them away, they are not doing your legs, back, knees or body any good. Your legs and feet and back are really worth the investment of good shoes.

I used to also buy the Truffles style because while they were lightweight and comfortable they could also withstand a lot of use, (they were pretty cheap too but, I went through about three pair a year).

Good luck!

I have a pair of crocs and love them. DH bought a pair for clinicals of nurse mate tennis shoes. I have heard good things about them too.

Hi,

While I have heard so many good things about nurse mates, I cannot wear them for even 8 hours without pain. It is most likely because I have a high arch/instep and these offer nada for an arch support. I bought them both because of their reputation and well, after the first pair was worthless to me I figured I would give a different style a try. Bummer, one day and into the garbage they go!

p.s. shoestyle is as equally important as shoe manufacturer

I've only ever bought Nurse mates and have never had problems. I have flat feet so I have to wear very supportive shoes or I will end up in terrible pain by the end of the night!! Although, after reading some of the replies I must say that i am interested in finding out about some of the other ones people are talking about!!:lol2:

Good luck shoe hunting!!

Hi,

Aha, this makes sense. I figured that nurse mates must be for folks with flat feet. As I posted, I not only have an arch but a high arch. Ew, yeowch how the nursemates make me suffer. With each step my foot slides to the front and then slips back to the heel. Hmm.

Hey, I have a size 9.5 Kate right here that I have only worn twice, want them?
