shift for new graduate in Med/surg?

Hi everyone,

I would like to know if it's possible to obtain a RN position, 10/12 hrs night shift.,in Surgery or Medical Unit?I 've got my license as a registered nurse and actually,I am applying for a job.It seems that most of jobs opportunities are offering rotating shift?So,I was wondering if when you start your career as a nurse ,you have to work in 8hrs shift only and with rotation evenings/nights?

I just got offered a job (in virginia) as a new grad BSN on nights part-time approx 24 hrs. a week. So I would say there are situations out there like you're wantin' ...it seems like not as many ppl wanna work nights so it should technically be easier to find...maybe?

Specializes in MICU for 4 years, now PICU for 3 years!.

Most positions that say they are day/night rotations will let you work straight nights without any problems. Try and contact the nurse manager of the units you are looking at, and see if they will let you do straight nights. Usually they are so desperate for night shifters that they will not object! there aren't many rn positions that happen to have 'rotating' shifts. most, if not all, are either 8hr shifts. but facilities today are usually 12hr shifts (7a-7p, or 7p-7a). some facilities offer 4 10hr shifts/week. if you are interested in working nights, then i am sure you won't have one bit of a problem. there aren't many nurses out there that want to work nights. working nights isn't for everyone. i have worked nights for sixteen years and it takes a toll on your health, etc., but i wouldn't work days or any amount of money.
