SHARP Winter 2013/2014 New Nurse Residency

U.S.A. California

Hello! It's that exciting time again!

:)

I'm starting this thread to support, advise, and inform each other about this residency program. If you don't mind, share a little bit about yourselves.

Graduation date: Degree type: healthcare experience: Any special skills or certificates:

Thanks!

I graduated back in December 2012. I have a couple of months of experience as a RN and a year experience as a CNA. I graduated with a ASN and am currently working on my BSN. This will be my 4rth time applying to Sharps NNRP!!! I have the basic certifications (BLS and ACLS) I applied to Grossmont's PCU and telemetry/MS.

Specializes in Hospice & Palliative Care, Oncology, M/S.

I searched for 10 months, beginning my search before I even graduated. It was frustrating and at times heartbreaking, especially when I would be told I was "next on the list" if someone turned down an offer.

I did everything I could, getting certified and taking classes. I revamped I my resume so many times it bordered on ridiculous. I practiced interview questions ad nauseum.

One day I got the call. I will always remember that. In that second, all my work paid off. In that second, I went from defeated to exuberant.

My advice? Look for ways to live your life while going through this. Look for experiences you can take into interviews. If you don't understand a question, say, "what I'm hearing you ask is this... Is that correct?" I was told that asking that showed I was concerned about correct communication.

I know you're all doing everything you possibly can to land these impossible positions. Remember to not take it personally when you're not offered a spot. You will end up where you're meant to be. Sometimes that may not be your top pick... But I can't imagine myself anywhere else. Sharp is an amazing place to work, and CV has proven to me that I am meant to be there. I love my floor and love my job.

Head high. I've been there. Keep plugging, you can do it. :)

Good advice Coriander and thanks for sharing. I have excepted that I will not land the position that I really want but can always transfer later on. It's good to hear that you love it so much!! I've worked for sharp before and they are a great company!!

Would you mind sharing the rate of pay new grads usually start at?? I only ask because I have been told several different amounts from28-36/hr. And it's not really a question I want to ask in an interview. But thanks anyway for the info. I read through your progress in the other thread and know it's not fun!

Thank you for sharing your story Coriander. Its uplifting to know that eventually all if this crazy on-line application submitting, website stalking, and excruciating silent waiting will result in a nursing job. I miss caring for patients and, at times, am disheartened by the impossibility of landing a new nurse grad residency. In the past few months I've certainly questioned my decision to become a nurse, something I never once questioned while student nursing. I'm so so glad to hear you enjoy where you work and what you do...it makes me even more hopeful that I'll end up working for Sharp.

Speaking of Sharp fellow job seekers, I checked "My Activity" on Sharp's career site and then clicked on Job ID 52979 (Winter New Grad RN). It states; "We will be accepting applications for this position from October 1, 10 AM PST through October 7, 5 PM PST. Access to apply will only be available for this time-frame." Does anyone else receive this message, or anything different? I'm starting to worry that maybe my application wasn't electronically received? Yikes!

Wow I actually got an email response for Mary Birch asking me to fill out a form . Has anyone else had anything like this? I am rooting for all of us :)

I applied for a NICU New grad position in June/July and they had me fill out the supplemental form. Definitely get that back to them quickly!

I am with CaliRN13. Fill it out ASAP and hope you have everything that is required or you won't get an interview! I had everything and still didn't get an interview so who knows. But congrats that is exciting. They should be working through those apps fast cuz those programs start a lot sooner!! They use the supplemental forms to narrow down the pool for those that don't qualify! Good luck!

So weird because I already submitted the supplemental form. The form I had to email in today was titled " labor and delivery screening form" it had a few of behavioral essay questions. I'm so bad at those! I have trouble remembering scenarios from my clinical days because I have massive baby brain now after having my son! lol

Hey Alexischristine. Yeah I meant to say screening form. They usually send those for L&D and NICU. More for the special units to make sure the candidates have everything that is required. And if you get an interview be ready for a lot of behavioral questions! Lots of scenarios to remember.

Anyone hear anything about the adult acute care units?

Wish I could say yes, but so far I haven't heard anything :/

I think someone asked the pay rate for new grads. The base pay is/was 34.53 with an extra differential for BSN, night shift and evenings. I can't remember the differentials. Hope that helps. :)

Thanks for all the info you gave us @Coriander!

I think I heard Sharp has a preference for people living in SD or people who went to nursing school in SD. Is this true?
