SFSU Generic MSN for Fall 2010

Published

I went to their website today and found that the nursing application has now been posted. Due date is January 15, 2010. Now it's time to bug my professors for another round of forms and letters. I have one letter, but need the form to get filled out. It's so embarrassing to go back to the same people. I feel like I owe them the world. What's the most number of requests anyone has asked one person?

Anyway back to the application itself. On it you have to choose a Graduate Program Emphasis. If my goal is to become a Diabetes Educator, should I choose Adult Acute CNS or Maternal/Child CNS, or should I choose Public Health? Does anyone know if we can change specialties mid-stream?

Thanks.

Hopefully the deadline for accepting the award (mine is April 8th) means we'll hear by then! Good luck to everyone! :)

I am going to be applying to SFSU in the near future and I am having a hard time thinking who I should ask for my letters of recommendation. I went to UCSC and all of my science professors barely know my name and I'm sure they don't remember me =( i'm scared that I won't get a good recommendation letter. Who did you ask and how? Also, do you know that if you get an A in a course, can you ask that professor even though he barely knows you? Please reply...I'm desperate!

In response to your question about asking for recommendations: Remember that it is part of a professor's job description to write these letters. If you feel like you haven't gotten to know a particular professor very well/they don't know you very well, that's perfectly fine. If you got an A in their class, I would email them a note telling them you really enjoyed their class, you're applying to grad school for nursing, and would be honored if they'd write you a recommendation. After they reply (yes, of course), offer then to set up a time to meet with them and talk a little bit so they can get to know you better --you could also suggest this when you ask them. I hope this is helpful. Good luck!!

Momo23,

Thank you so much for your response; I really appreciate it! You have made me feel much less worried about the recommendation part. Thank you! I wish you luck in your nursing endeavors!

Hey All!

I have another question. I went to a UC and majored in health sciences (molecular bio plus clinical health care), but my GPA isn't competitive (2.92) and I'm afraid that I won't get into anywhere. I'm not a bad student, it's just that my grades don't reflect on the person I am. I'm really scared and I don't know what to do. I started volunteering at Santa Clara Valley Medical center and I'm still finishing up some pre-requisite courses, so I'm aiming for a high GPA for those classes. Was/is anyone in the same boat? Any tips on becoming a more competitive candidate?

tlw87... I had no recommendations from professors... only my volunteer/work related experiences. I've been accepted to Stony Brook & wait-listed @ Columbia (I'll find out in a week), so I'm assuming it's okay (not ideal) to not have any academic related letters of rec. But, I'm sure every school is different. I was in the same boat (received A's in my pre-reqs, but didn't know the profs well), so when it came time to choose recommenders, I decided to ask my former supervisor, current supervisor, & volunteer coordinator - all healthcare related. And of course, choosing this way, I was confident that they would write stellar letters b/c they knew me so well & could give more insight into my personality & potential for success as an RN...

Grrr, tomorrow is April 5th. This whole process takes so long. I would recommend that everybody accept the financial aid award offers this week...it doesn't matter whether you get in or not, if you don't then it just sits there. Every school does something like it but SFSU is just really quick about it.

Hello Everyone,

Do accept your financial aid asap because we will not find out before the 8th.

Here's the update:

FYI, I called the nursing department today, and was now told that we will find out our status starting April 19th by snail mail. Arghhhh!! I was expecting to hear from them sooner since I was told earlier on that we will hear from the department by early-mid April.

OK, maybe this isn't a good sign, but how do I accept my financial aid?

This is what my portal says:

We have received the results of your 2010 - 2011 FAFSA. You should receive notification via email of your 2010 - 2011 financial aid award within one week.

Thanks for the reminder about the financial aid! I had totally forgotten about it. I've been checking my mail every day and will probably continue checking it until I get something from SFSU. I'm impatiently waiting!

Thanks for the links, however I only have those available for 2009-2010. :(
