I went to their website today and found that the nursing application has now been posted. Due date is January 15, 2010. Now it's time to bug my professors for another round of forms and letters. I have one letter, but need the form to get filled out. It's so embarrassing to go back to the same people. I feel like I owe them the world. What's the most number of requests anyone has asked one person?
Anyway back to the application itself. On it you have to choose a Graduate Program Emphasis. If my goal is to become a Diabetes Educator, should I choose Adult Acute CNS or Maternal/Child CNS, or should I choose Public Health? Does anyone know if we can change specialties mid-stream?
Thanks.
Hello Everyone,
Does anyone have any idea on what are the chances of getting into the generic master program at state? I found out that I am currently one out of the fourteen students on the nursing administrator wait list. I have no idea how many people applied for the fall 2010 semester, the girl I got a hold of in the nursing department says she has no idea. Also does of the current students in the program have any advice for me?
Hi everyone! I received an email from the SFSU program today. They mentioned the need to take the Analytical Writing Section of the GRE by semester six (of seven), and suggested taking it before classes start. I'm in the spring public health program BTW. Does anyone know if this means I have to take the whole GRE, or can I take just the writing portion of the GRE? I hope I don't have to take the whole test--gack!
I'm looking forward to hearing more from future classmates! :)
CelieSF, I am a paranoid freak so I won't divulge my # on the waiting list, since that could compromise my annonymity. Suffice to say, it was pretty high.
LN, they only look at the analytical writing portion of the GRE, they won't consider the verbal or math sections. If you want more good information about the analytical writing component of the GRE, go to http://www.ets.org/Media/Tests/GRE/pdf/awintro.pdf .
I was going to call the department today, because in previous years they gave you a choice between the analytical writing (GRE) or SFSU's own GET exam (Graduate Essay Test). I called the testing center at SFSU, and they said that yes, they still administer the GET exam. I am not sure why the Nursing Department no longer offers a choice (or perhaps they do, but it's not posted?), but I bet they just might accept either. Since the GET was good enough for last's year cohort, and was an option on the website up until about 3 months ago. The GET is better, you don't want to sweat or waste mind power on sections that don't count, or ruin any standardized testing record. For me, if I took the GRE I would study for the whole darn thing. Anyway, I would really prefer to take the GET, although it's a handwritten exam which is the one bummer. I am not sure if the GRE is automated, but it would be nice to able to type things out. You can find out more about the GET at http://www.sfsu.edu/~testing/get.html#info
For me, I prefer take the GET. I didn't get the email you got today - probably send them in batches by major, but I was thinking about this today, and would like to lobby to just take the GET! Why is it no longer on the website anymore?
Back to your question, don't worry about the other sections of the GRE. But whatever you do score, I think would be on a permanent record since it's all or nothing with that exam.
Van Halen Fan,
Thanks for the GET info! I also would MUCH rather take that then do the GRE. I totally agree with your point about wasting brain energy and stress over the rest of the GRE. Let me know what you find out about whether we can take the GET instead. I'd be happy to lobby on our behalf as well.
Hi LN! I'm also in the Spring 2011 Community PH cohort. I had the same exact question you had about having to take the whole GRE or not. Not having to take the GRE prior to applying was a big plus for why I really wanted to go to SFSU. It bites we have to take it. I wish I had checked this forum earlier because I registered to take the GRE earlier today and I didn't know about the GET being a possibility. Does anyone know how much it costs to take the GET?
Hi Everyone! This is my first post here on allnurses.com. I used this forum to read up on the admission status for the nursing program and I found it so helpful to finally sign up for it. Anyways, I know some information about the exams. So technically everyone that is admitted to the GMSN program is considered a "Conditionally classified - masters" that conditional part is then removed once you pass an essay test to say that you are capable of writing at a graduate level (this is before you start the graduate courses after the 2nd year). Currently there are 2 options: 1) GET or 2) GRE writing portion
I think the GET is the best option and most likely the cheapest at $50. To take the GRE is about $175 (I believe thats the ballpark). The sad thing is that the GET is offered for the last time in Aug. 2010. The last 2 test dates for the GET is August 13 and August 14. I just registered for the Aug 13 date (hopefully I pass and not have to worry about this later). You can register for the test with the testing center: GET General Information -Testing Center - San Francisco State University
The only thing I don't know is if you fail the test is there an option to take a course or do you have to take the GREs until you pass it? I know for sure you can't start graduate courses during year 3 if you don't pass this essay test, but I suppose this will be one of the many questions people will be asking at the Orientation session in July.
I didn't hear anything so I contacted the department just to verify they got my response form, and they confirmed they did, and they said it will take until August for most of the Spring admits to get a status change from "dept rev" to "admitted." They are working on stuff for the fall folks first. Other than a response to my follow up, I would have heard didley.
Jess, thanks for that information on the GET - I am registered for it hnow. My bad on thinking there were be no price, DANG, sounds like everything has a price these days. Maybe one day I will get over the fact that it's not 1988 anymore? I think I better stop watching VH1 classic.

Hey VanHalenFan, do you happen to know your number on the waitlist?
