Hi everyone, I'm creating a thread for the prospective students applying to the fall 2016 SFSU ELMSN program. It would be great to see the stats of fellow cohorts for the program!
@benrz Thank you for sharing your tips and experience interviewing with SFSU! Congratulations on your acceptance to the Samuel Merritt FNP program. I was offered a seat for the CM program and plan to accept as well, although SFSU is still my top choice. It just really worries me that there are only 16 seats for the entire cohort when there are so many qualified candidates...
Hi Vinh222! First off, congratulations on your acceptance to schools so far! I've been following a couple of Entry Level Masters Program forums and keep seeing your name pop up..so I guess we have applied to many of the same schools. If I'm not mistaken, we might even have been at the same table during lunch for Western's EAOD! If you don't mind, I just wanted to gain some insight as to how you've gone about narrowing down the schools or why you would choose SFSU over Samuel Merritt/Western?
Hi Mchang610, sorry for the late reply. I do remember you from EAOD, hope you are doing well!
In short, SMU Case Management and SFSU Public Health tracks both offer great programs for me to be a public health nurse home-visitor. While SFSU is 3 years and SMU is only 2, SFSU's tuition is a steal. So it really comes down to the cost of a public vs. private institution for me. What are your thoughts on the schools so far?
@vinh222 Tuition is also an important factor for me. What concerns me about SFSU is that I am unable to find much information beyond what is posted on the website. I'd like to hear from students who have gone through the program, but it seems that they are quite quiet (though of course there are only so many students each cohort). SFSU is 3 years, but I'm wondering what students do during the summers since classes only take place during the Fall and Spring. Additionally, I'm considering how big of an impact it is to go to school and have clinicals in the area I hope to work in after graduation since I'm considering Western too. Just trying to weigh the pros and cons, haha. Any thoughts?
@Mchang610 Majority of the nurses on my team here all graduated from the ELMSN program at SFSU. All speak very highly of their experience, though they have graduated over 10 years ago and I'm sure some things have changed since (especially the cohort size b/c one of the nurses said his cohort had 50 students!). During the summers, some found temporary jobs as a CNA for additional experience or enjoyed the time off with their families since a lot of them had kids. You do form relationships through meeting other nurses in your clinicals which may or may not help you land a job there later.. but something like that can be unpredictable. Regardless of which school you choose, I am sure you will become a wonderful nurse. Good luck!
Hi @Karenara
When I spoke to the nursing office a few weeks ago they stated that those not asked to come in for an interview were no longer being considered for admissions. On the bright side I believe they will be letting us know either way. On the email they sent back in February it did say that they only anticipated finishing the initial review during this week. If it's taking them longer then expected it could be up to another week before we hear anything. I think it's likely we'll start hearing back closer to the end of the week. I know it's nerve racking but I think we're close to an answer. I'll post if I hear anything, more compulsive email checking to ensue tomorrow. As always, good luck.
@Karenara
I'm guessing we'll either hear something either tomorrow or the beginning of next week. Since it seems like no one has heard anything back yet I take that as a sign that we are all still in the running. I think it's taken them longer to review the applications then they originally anticipated. I'm keeping my fingers crossed for hearing news tomorrow.

Congratulations on the CM program. Maybe we'll have classes together in the fall. (I think all 48 are together in the beginning). It was an individual interview with 3 interviewers and very short (20 minutes maybe?). It may or may not be the same this time but at least that gives you an idea.
