San Francisco State University ELM-A Spring 2018
Hi everyone! I've been obsessively stalking all of the other SF State ELM-A topics but I haven't seen one for Spring 2018 yet. I hope we can share information as we try to survive this process together!
Some information I got from the online info session:
ADMISSION STATS: Every year 65-115 applications are received, 24 are ultimately admitted
COST: The ELM-A program costs a total of $65-66,000 (not subsidized by state funding, only federal loans available). The non-accelerated 3 year Entry level MSN in Fall semester is a total cost of $24,000.
LENGTH: 2 years, (6 semesters) no Summer breaks. Last 2 semesters are graduate-level courses.
DEADLINE: Cal State Apply: Aug. 31, NursingCAS: Sept. 17
LOR: 3, one must address health-related experience
EMPHASES: emphases do not affect your admission (no quotas for any of the specialties)
Adult gerontology, pediatrics, women's health, community/public health. Also Nursing Administration and Public Health Nursing.
INTERVIEW: Group format interview sometime in October (not 100% on this). I've heard that it is VERY brief.
GRE: Analytical Writing score of 4+ (only writing score is considered)
A little myself: Semi recent grad - English major from small liberal arts college, 1.5 years of experience volunteering at a women's health clinic as a health educator, also a volunteer hospital birth doula for 1 year. I have never worked professionally in a health field other than through volunteer work, which may disadvantage me. I speak Spanish fluently and live in the Bay Area. Undergrad GPA: 3.81, Prerequisite GPA: 3.85. Still waiting to hear about GRE Analytical Writing. I am hoping to apply for a women's health specialty or Public Health. I should really decide by now!
Please post about yourself and any questions or answers you might have! Hope to hear from you all ?
MandaNursePanda, I wanted to wait to respond to you my stats are not the best but I received an interview and was ultimately admitted to the university. Your stats sound amazing and are way better than mine. My overall GPA is a 3.2, my last 60 units is a 3.5, and my prereq GPA is 3.3. My letters of req were from my Sociology professor, my internship coordinator, and my volunteer coordinator. My letter writers were great and worked with me so my letters of rec confirmed everything I said in my personal statement. In my undergrad implemented a program to reduce the number of medical mishaps that can happen when two medications are prescribed that have adverse reactions when taken together. I went into the community and asked residents if they wanted to fill out a medical information card, so they will always have a list of their medicines with them when they go to their GP, specialists, or the ER. This is a big problem in the rural county I live in and I have seen the importance of having a formal list of medicines patients are prescribed during my EMT ride alongs. This is ultimately why I applied to the Public Health track at SFSU. I also mentioned in my personal statement how I hope to return to my county to improve the public health system after my nursing degree. I have only volunteered at an ER (although I am currently EMT certified), and I'm graduating with my bachelors this semester. My major is Human Bio with a double minor in public health and psychology. I don't know if this helps, I hope so!

CCHerb, your stats sound awesome too! You obviously care about your community and have experience helping others. SFSU chose people they knew would make an impact, so be proud of yourself! Congrats! I have faith that everyone admitted will make an impact in this world and I have to have faith that this isn't the right time or place. I hope you continue to help others and change this world for the better. CONGRATS!
Hello All,
I've been accepted to the Women's Health CNS track! Congrats to everyone admitted! :) I will be accepting the invitation. I look forward to meeting you guys!
My stats: 3.5 last 60 units gpa, 4.0 prereq gpa, 4 on GRE writing portion, 2.5 years experience as a cancer research coordinator, and letters of rec from an oncologist, a family planning doctor I did research with, and my chem professor. I did pretty bad in chem during undergrad and then re-took it to show growth. I had my professor from the second time around write my letter.
I had a 3.0 undergrad GPA-super low. and after graduating I truly thought I wouldn't get in anywhere. But I read other's experiences in allnurses.com, decided to work hard and gain experience, did well in post-grad classes, and raised my last 60 units GPA. I hope future applicants who read this forum don't feel disheartened if they don't have a "perfectly well-rounded" application. It's possible, try your best and show how passionate you are about nursing! :)
