SFSU ELM-A Spring 2018

San Francisco State University ELM-A Spring 2018

Hi everyone! I've been obsessively stalking all of the other SF State ELM-A topics but I haven't seen one for Spring 2018 yet. I hope we can share information as we try to survive this process together!

Some information I got from the online info session:

ADMISSION STATS: Every year 65-115 applications are received, 24 are ultimately admitted

COST: The ELM-A program costs a total of $65-66,000 (not subsidized by state funding, only federal loans available). The non-accelerated 3 year Entry level MSN in Fall semester is a total cost of $24,000.

LENGTH: 2 years, (6 semesters) no Summer breaks. Last 2 semesters are graduate-level courses.

DEADLINE: Cal State Apply: Aug. 31, NursingCAS: Sept. 17

LOR: 3, one must address health-related experience

EMPHASES: emphases do not affect your admission (no quotas for any of the specialties)

Adult gerontology, pediatrics, women's health, community/public health. Also Nursing Administration and Public Health Nursing.

INTERVIEW: Group format interview sometime in October (not 100% on this). I've heard that it is VERY brief.

GRE: Analytical Writing score of 4+ (only writing score is considered)

A little myself: Semi recent grad - English major from small liberal arts college, 1.5 years of experience volunteering at a women's health clinic as a health educator, also a volunteer hospital birth doula for 1 year. I have never worked professionally in a health field other than through volunteer work, which may disadvantage me. I speak Spanish fluently and live in the Bay Area. Undergrad GPA: 3.81, Prerequisite GPA: 3.85. Still waiting to hear about GRE Analytical Writing. I am hoping to apply for a women's health specialty or Public Health. I should really decide by now!

Please post about yourself and any questions or answers you might have! Hope to hear from you all ?

Thanks for the reply and good luck! I'm at 12:45 tomorrow :) someone mentioned that it's a panel/group interview? I'm assuming there will be multiple of us and we all have to answer the same question they ask? Not sure if this is correct...

I did not receive a confirmation either so I'm just going to show up and hope for the best :)

Wow, I knew they were 45 minutes but I didn't realize it would be so back-to-back! I was told there will be four of us in each group, but they wouldn't say any more than that about the format! So I don't know whether we'll go around and each answer each question, or if it's more of a conversation and you jump in when you have something to say.

I'm hoping it's a bit more casual and not so interview-y. I generally know what I want to say but tend to get nervous when I'm put on the spot haha. It's also hard to not compare yourselves to the others in your group..guess we will have to see and find out. People from past threads seemed to have faired just fine so I'm hoping it will be the same for us!

Yeah it's hard to imagine how it will go but I agree, probably more casual than most interviews. My biggest worry is how to balance wanting to share everything I'm excited about sharing, with not being a loudmouth/dominating the conversation. I have a little practice from doing focus groups, I guess :)

Can those of you that got interviews please share your stats? I think that would help others and be very appreciated by future applicants like myself! THANK YOU!!!

Hi MandaNursePanda,

Feel free to look at my stats earlier in this thread; I did get an interview.

How did everyone's interviews go?!?! I'm basically going to keep going over all the things I wish I had said differently until I hear back, ugh. Does anyone still have theirs coming up, or are we all done? If anyone finds out when we'll hear back, please post here!

Hi everyone,

New to the thread, but have definitely been reading them as they come. As you said yawp, there are so many things I wish I could have said differently, and I hope that we will have the opportunity to. Anxiously waiting...

Best of luck to everyone! I definitely did not do well in the interview--nerves got the best of me and I rambled a lot. :( I was thoroughly impressed by everyone interviewing and everyone deserves to get accepted! I'm hoping they look at everything holistically. Anyone know if they have a waitlist?

MandaNursePanda, for my general stats, I had an alright undergrad overall GPA of 3.2 at a competitive university (had 2 hiccup semesters that brought it down) but retook one of my nursing prerequisites and some other prerequisites which helped. I have extensive healthcare experience though in order to try and make up for it haha. I volunteered at a hospital for 1.5 years in undergrad and volunteered abroad for 2 summers--the most recent trip was being able to shadow midwives in a hospital. I currently have been working at a Fertility clinic in San Francisco for a little over a year, I started off doing just admin work and then moved my way up to be a medical assistant and phlebotomist. I applied to the Women's Health track at SFSU.

Also for anyone wondering, start date for the program is the last week of January. There is also a mandatory orientation on December 4th!

I totally rambled too, hopefully then everyone did :) I was happy enough with the content of what I said, just there was no organization whatsoever :/ And no room to make up for it later! I too am hoping they look at it all holistically, as opposed to we all made it to the interview, ands now the interview alone determines who makes it in.

Thank you! My stats: 3.6 in both overall and pre-recs with English and psychology degrees, CNA for 600 hours at a subacute care facility, student manager of lifegaurds at UCD, worked as a foster parent/caregiver for 2 years, letter of rec from former president of the MLA, former Microbio director at UCLA, and my boss who is head of surgery. BAs with emphases in development and ECE, GRE of 4 (I could have done better). I curretly work with toddlers and I applied for the pediatrics specialty; however, I was not granted an interview.

Good luck everyone! I am sure you are all fantastic applicants and honestly if it means you all will be great nurses, helping many people, then I am proud of each and every one of you!

I'm not sure why you weren't granted an interview because your stats sound awesome and you have a lot of experience! It's really hard to know what they are looking for :( Best of luck to you if you plan on applying again. What other schools are you looking at?
