San Francisco State University ELM-A Spring 2018

Hi everyone! I've been obsessively stalking all of the other SF State ELM-A topics but I haven't seen one for Spring 2018 yet. I hope we can share information as we try to survive this process together!

Some information I got from the online info session:

ADMISSION STATS: Every year 65-115 applications are received, 24 are ultimately admitted

COST: The ELM-A program costs a total of $65-66,000 (not subsidized by state funding, only federal loans available). The non-accelerated 3 year Entry level MSN in Fall semester is a total cost of $24,000.

LENGTH: 2 years, (6 semesters) no Summer breaks. Last 2 semesters are graduate-level courses.

DEADLINE: Cal State Apply: Aug. 31, NursingCAS: Sept. 17

LOR: 3, one must address health-related experience

EMPHASES: emphases do not affect your admission (no quotas for any of the specialties)

Adult gerontology, pediatrics, women's health, community/public health. Also Nursing Administration and Public Health Nursing.

INTERVIEW: Group format interview sometime in October (not 100% on this). I've heard that it is VERY brief.

GRE: Analytical Writing score of 4+ (only writing score is considered)

A little myself: Semi recent grad - English major from small liberal arts college, 1.5 years of experience volunteering at a women's health clinic as a health educator, also a volunteer hospital birth doula for 1 year. I have never worked professionally in a health field other than through volunteer work, which may disadvantage me. I speak Spanish fluently and live in the Bay Area. Undergrad GPA: 3.81, Prerequisite GPA: 3.85. Still waiting to hear about GRE Analytical Writing. I am hoping to apply for a women's health specialty or Public Health. I should really decide by now!

Please post about yourself and any questions or answers you might have! Hope to hear from you all ?

thanks so much! I tried to send you a message but I havent posted enough according to the website to start a message :) I will grab it in person tomorrow :) Thank you again!

FYI if you are starting tomorrow(!), our afternoon class is not meeting tomorrow (the professor is giving us online readings in lieu) and a bunch of our cohort is planning on doing lunch after the morning class gets out. Congratulations!

Hi yawp, I am interviewing next week for the non-accelerated program. Can you provide any more information on the interview aside from it being a group interview? I'm trying to figure out how best to prepare. Thanks!

They asked us not to disclose details. I will say that everyone in my cohort agreed we were WAY more prepared than we needed to be. If you thought/enunciated enough in your application essay to get you to this point, you've already thought/enunciated way more than you will need to for the interview. I would say review your essay and don't stress beyond that. Unless they switch it up drastically, they just want to meet you as a person.

Hello there!

Has anyone applied to ELM-A for spring 2019?? I am anxiously awaiting their response next week to see if I've been granted an interview and just want to see who else is in the same boat! A little about my stats... Undergrad GPA was not strong but I have around a 3.68 in my last 60 units. I've been working as a front and back office medical assistant in a pediatric office for the past three years, have a phlebotomy license, and have over 130 hours volunteering in the mother-baby and MICU nursing units. Received a 4.5 on the writing section on the GRE. So far I've applied to a few other programs with no luck, but I am hoping I have a better chance in this program seeing as they only look at the last 60 units of your GPA and require medial experience :) Best of luck to everyone!

Hello! I also applied for Spring 2019 and am eagerly waiting to hear back next week about interviews. Your stats and experience sound great, so I think you've got a fair shot. :) I'm also in a similar boat, having applied to other programs too with little luck, but SFSU is one of my top schools. It's just very competitive these days. I don't think anyone has started a thread yet for the Spring 2019 cohort. Perhaps we should start one?

Ah so good to hear!!! Hopefully we'll both have better luck this time around, applying is exhausting! Yeah it would be nice to hear from anyone that's applied and keep updated on the interview offers. Honestly this is my first time using this site and couldn't figure out how to start a new thread...

Haha I sure hope so too! I've been stalking this thread because it's been particularly helpful. I received an email that interview invites go out the 3rd week of October but it feels like an eternity! Also, I just created a thread for Spring 2019. Check it out here!

Yes, I hope so too! The application process has been exhausting. :( Interview invites are supposed to start going out the 3rd week of October so hopefully we get some good news! Also, I just started a thread for Spring 2019. Check it out. :)

hi,

I am currently retaking physiology and microbiology to boost my science prereq gpa. I also need to boost my last 60 semester unit gpa, does anyone have recommendations on which classes to take to do this? Does anyone know of the lowest gpa someone has been accepted with?

Hi Kelleykristina,

I am currently in the ELM-A program. My undergrad GPA was pretty low, around 3.0 but I took a bunch of prereqs at community college afterwards and got my last 60 units up to around 3.7. I honestly think they really value experience, so I would try to work or at least volunteer in the medical field. As for what classes, I just looked at all the schools I wanted to apply to and started taking prerequisite classes that would fulfill all the different requirements the schools had (anthropology, speech, developmental psych, etc.) I don't know what the lowest GPA was, but the good thing is that they really do only look at your last 60 units, so just keep adding on those classes. Good luck! ?
