SFSU ELM-A Spring 2018

Hi there! I, also, have been stalking previous posts. I think this is the first one for the Spring '18 ELM-A program. I'm applying to the program this cycle as well, nice to meet you! Some info about myself: I'm a recent grad of SFSU (B.S. in Health Education, minor in Women's Health Issues) and have been working at a Planned Parenthood clinic for the last 2 years. As part of my undergrad program, I spent 200 hours interning at the SF Department of Public Health's Family Planning and Preconception Care division. My overall GPA is a 3.7, my SFSU GPA (last 60 units) is a 4.0 and I have a 3.9 in my nursing prereq's. I haven't taken the GRE yet, I'm taking it on the 29th, feeling a bit nervous about that. I'm planning on applying to the women's health specialty. That's awesome that you're a doula! Very cool, and super relevant experience. Have you received an email with your SF State student ID # yet? I submitted my general application to the school of graduate studies last Tues and haven't heard back yet, wondering if I should check in with them. Best of luck on the application process! :)

Hello Everyone! I'm applying as well, super nervous! Nice to meet everyone :) I am applying for the CNS women's health specialty. About myself:

I graduated from UCLA with a less than stellar 3.0 GPA in my B.S. program. From what I gathered they only look at the last 60 units right? I have a 4.0 prerequisite GPA and a 3.7 GPA for my last 60 units. I've been working for the department of GYN Oncology as a clinical research coordinator for the past 2 years. I'm also taking the GRE on the 29th and also feeling nervous! So cool that you both have awesome experience in Women's Health, definitely such an interesting field! :) @Taeler84 I have not gotten my student ID yet and submitted my application the same day as you.

How are you guys going about picking your recommenders?

Nice to meet you @bay_np! When it comes to GPA I think they mainly focus on your nursing prereq's and last 60 units, no worries on that front. That sounds like really interesting work that you do! Very cool. Thanks for the student ID update, I checked in w/ graduate admissions and they said it's normal for it to take around 5 business days. For my recommendations I'm planning to do two that are work-related and one from a previous professor. What about you? Best of luck with everything!

Same here! I have 2 from work, and 1 from a professor. I contacted the SFSU Graduate Admissions today and they notified me that they are working out some kinks in their system, so we won't have a cal state apply ID until next week. They also notified me that the programs are aware of this issue.Did anyone else get a similar response, or hear back with a student ID?

Hello all,

I am applying for CNS with a pediatrics focus. I have a 4.0 in the prereqs and I think 3.85ish in the last 60 units, so I hope that's truly all they look at, because my grades in my youth were... not so great. I think overall about a 3.2. I got a 5 in the writing portion of the GRE, 167 verbal and 158 quant but I guess those don't matter? I don't have a ton of clinical experience- I've volunteered at Children's for about a year. But that work has been pretty substantial, and I have a lot of experience doing community work in public libraries and parks, and have good letters of recommendation.

I just tried to log in to NursingCAS because the new application period was supposed to open up today, but it doesn't look like it has, is that what you all are seeing as well? Also, I did all the transcript entry (every single class) in the CalApply, and now it looks like we are supposed to do it again in CAS, is that your understanding too? Yeesh!

Totally, @bay_np I got the exact same response. I spoke with graduate admissions again after the 5 days went by without any change and they said that it's an issue with the Cal Apply system that's being worked out and that the programs are aware of it. Best of luck Tuesday with the GRE! :)

For NursingCAS, the application didn't end up opening until later in the evening. I, also, was thrown off by that when I logged in originally and gave them a call. For the transcript section, @rhnovak we do re-enter all of our data again. I know, that's a bit of a bummer. I downloaded the pdf from my Cal Apply application and used that as a reference which was helpful.

Alright, at least it wasn't actually as bad entering it all the first time as I thought it was going be. But I was looking at that CAS application with a bit of deja vu!

Have you guys started requesting transcripts to CAS? I can't figure out a good way to use the form they require, when all my schools just want me to submit an online request. Has anyone figured out a good way to do this? I have a lot of schools to sort it out with

Hi everyone!! Good luck to you all :) I come from a background in nutrition, I have a B.S. in Dietetics. For the past 2 years I've been working as a dietetic technician at a skilled nursing facility in marin and also at SF General, and I also just started a medical assistant position 3 months ago. My goal is to be accepted into their public health track. My overall GPA was 3.63, pre-req 3.3, last 60 units 3.9, GRE writing 4. Did anybody attend the info session?

Can anyone tell me the difference between the ELM-A and ELMSN programs? I gather that ELM-A starts Spring 2018 and the other in Fall 2018. Both seem to allow you to become an RN and offer the NP option after working as an RN for a year. I just applied for the ELM-A but I think the ELMSN may be a better fit for me.... Any guidance would be helpful.

Hi LAbear7!

Essentially the ELM-A has no real break, you have classes both summers so you finish about a year earlier. ELMSN doesn't have class in the summer. However, some of the ELM-A program is through extended learning, and from what I gather you don't get access to state financial aid for the accelerated program, so it's more expensive than the ELMSN. You end up with the same degrees for both, and their # of applicants and acceptances are really similar, it's just that one takes longer (ELMSN) and the other is more expensive/fast paced(ELM-A).
