San Francisco State University ELM-A Spring 2018

Hi everyone! I've been obsessively stalking all of the other SF State ELM-A topics but I haven't seen one for Spring 2018 yet. I hope we can share information as we try to survive this process together!

Some information I got from the online info session:

ADMISSION STATS: Every year 65-115 applications are received, 24 are ultimately admitted

COST: The ELM-A program costs a total of $65-66,000 (not subsidized by state funding, only federal loans available). The non-accelerated 3 year Entry level MSN in Fall semester is a total cost of $24,000.

LENGTH: 2 years, (6 semesters) no Summer breaks. Last 2 semesters are graduate-level courses.

DEADLINE: Cal State Apply: Aug. 31, NursingCAS: Sept. 17

LOR: 3, one must address health-related experience

EMPHASES: emphases do not affect your admission (no quotas for any of the specialties)

Adult gerontology, pediatrics, women's health, community/public health. Also Nursing Administration and Public Health Nursing.

INTERVIEW: Group format interview sometime in October (not 100% on this). I've heard that it is VERY brief.

GRE: Analytical Writing score of 4+ (only writing score is considered)

A little myself: Semi recent grad - English major from small liberal arts college, 1.5 years of experience volunteering at a women's health clinic as a health educator, also a volunteer hospital birth doula for 1 year. I have never worked professionally in a health field other than through volunteer work, which may disadvantage me. I speak Spanish fluently and live in the Bay Area. Undergrad GPA: 3.81, Prerequisite GPA: 3.85. Still waiting to hear about GRE Analytical Writing. I am hoping to apply for a women's health specialty or Public Health. I should really decide by now!

Please post about yourself and any questions or answers you might have! Hope to hear from you all ?

I am praying for you! Do you mind if I ask how you were notified? I'm constantly refreshing my email and student portal, but have not yet received anything.

FerryBerry did you get an interview?

Congrats to everyone admitted! I received my offer today for the Women's Health CNS program and will be accepting. I can't wait to meet you all! Looking forward to this new and exciting chapter.

FerryBerry, I checked my SF portal and it doesn't say anything. I was just notified via email.

You guys, I was so sad and stressed yesterday when you were all posting and I didn't get an email- I couldn't believe I hadn't even made the waitlist! I ate two donuts and stayed up late hunkering down on applications for my back-up plans, due in two weeks, and then.... my acceptance letter came through at 5 this morning! Ack! Still working on adjusting my mood :/ I accepted for the pediatric CNS track.

Wooo!! I'm truly happy for all of you! I got waitlisted as well (I'm not surprised since I felt awful about my interview). I receive an email as well and they give you the chance to see what number on the waitlist you are so I wil be doing that today. Best of luck to everyone!! :)

I too was accepted for the public health focus! What do you think the orientation will focus on? Those that live in the area, do you have cars? Or will you be relying on BART? I have so many questions about what to bring etc.

Where are you guys seeing anything about there being an orientation? Is it just something they told you on the phone or at an info session? I don't see anything in my email or the website about an orientation.

I live in Alameda and have a car, but I will probably end up taking Bart, depending on the hours of class. I know there's a free shuttle from Daly City Bart, but not sure how often it runs. I'm from here so feel free to ask any other questions about the area.

Oh also, I believe that while public transportation is fine for class, it might be hard for clinicals. They seem to make a point of saying those will be all over the place. I don't actually know which semester clinicals start though...

Hi Yawp,

There is a mandatory orientation on December 4th. They had it listed on the sheet during the interview and when I received my accepctence invitation, it was at the bottom of the e-mail.

"Please complete the informal School of Nursing response from here. Those who reserve a space will be sent on-boarding infomation and December 4, 2017 orientation details."

As for me, I am currently living in NJ and am trying to figure out if I should bring my car or not. Also, I am trying to figure out where to live. My s/o and his family live in San Jose, CA and offered for me to live with them and it is a possibility, but I'm unsure of commuting with clinicals and if I have to take the Cal Train or if I bring my car, how often I'll be commuting. I could rent with roommates and I have friends in the Oakland/SF/Berkely area, but I'm unsure if i'll be able to afford "reduced" shared-rents given the cost and how much, if at all I'll be able to work.

Are you residing with family? I'm debating if I should consider student housing and if It's applicable for grad-students and how much FASFA and loans would be able to cover the expenses.

A lot of big situational questions.

Hello Everyone,

Sorry to intrude, but does anyone know if anyone has heard back for the BSN program yet? I applied to Spring 2018 Entry BSN Program, and attended the interview but didn't hear anything yet. I posted in the Spring 2018 BSN program discussion, but no one seems to be responding.

Sorry I don't know anything about how the BSN applications are going.

Thank you irishgirl0821,

I'm 37; I live with my boyfriend who's paying the bills, and my six-year-old daughter.

I'm so confused about why my acceptance letter seems so different from others'; someone please chime in if yours is like mine. Not only did mine come through at 5am, after most people's seem to have come in at 2pm, but it does not say that at the bottom. I wonder if it differs by specialty? I don't see why it would. My letter came from graduate admissions, and gave me instructions to go on to gateway to accept, which I did. It said I would be receiving more information in the mail, but does not mention that date. Weird :/
