serious question about a DNR order?

Published

first of all,let me say that i am not a nurse,i am a patient. i am a 30 year old male and i will be going to a clinic tomorrow. i have been experiencing many skipped beats when i walk and i feel like my arteries are blocked. i do not eat right and i have not lived a healthy lifestyle. to make a long story short and i have my reasons,i honestly do not want any treatment. i want to have a ekg and blood test and find out what kind of problems i have. and i seriously want a DNR order for myself. i am asking the nurses here, considering my age,do you feel that the doctor will honor my request? i do not know the laws and regulations for this. if i sign a DNR,will i get a bracelet that i can wear because if i crash on the street or at a public place,i do not want any CPR to be done on me. if any of you have the answer, please tell me,because i do not want to waste a trip to the clinic and not get what i want. thanks!

This really isnt the place to come to for health care advice, you really need to consult with your physician regarding this.

Honestly though, everything is your decision regarding your own healthcare. You have the right to deny anything. they are probably going to try to talk you out of it considering you are so young.

But for future reference, this isn't a place to come for medical advice. Nurses cannot diagnose nor give medical advice to patients. This needs to be done between you and your physician :-). Best of luck tomorrow!!!

You fill out the paperwork and I think that is it. Plenty of people make up their mind about what they want done at an early age. As for a bracelet I think you have to purchase that on your own though. Good luck!

As far as I know it is a one page form to fill out, and you can carry a copy of it with you as the original usually stays in your chart. A bracelet you could buy from medical stores, but carrying a copy of a DNR is more than enough.

An MD must honor a DNR if the form is filled out. It is your choice to fill out the forms though.

If you don't want anything done, why are you going to the clinic?

Truthfully, an MD is probably going to question the judgment of a 30 something who requests to be a DNR for potential coronary artery disease. Your post sounds like you might be depressed, and I wouldn't be surprised if he had you go through a psych eval before even considering a DNR for this reason.

You will probably run into some resistance because you are so young, and because it's likely that your health conditions are treatable, if not entirely reversible.

Many people have made choices that damaged their bodies. And they have gone on to live happier healthier lives after deciding to do things differently.

Is it possible that you are depressed? That can certainly make the future look bleak. But mood disorders are also treatable. If you have someone you can trust in your life, borrow their perspective long enough to sort through what's happening in your life that would cause you to let go of it so easily.

At 30 years old, you have options. If you're depressed, you may not feel like they are worth the effort, but at least consider that you could feel very differently a year from now if you can hang on that long.

Since you haven't been diagnosed with anything yet, go to the clinic, get the tests done and then go from there.

We wish you the best.
