Sent home from clinical

I was sent home from clinical this morning due to not being fully versed about a surgery that my patient had completed. I understand the rationale of being aware. I was required to revisit the hospital yesterday as my initial patient was discharged, and was assigned a new patient. I live in a small city, so it is not a major inconvenience to travel to the hospital and back home.

Being sent home was a little harsh. They should sent you to an empty room with a computer and have you research the surgery and then report your findings to the instructor.

I agree, but that is what the course leader is driving unfortunately. I did offer to take my coffee break early to go and research it, but they did not bite. So they said to write a journal and make up later, I am just unsure if I will have a future in this program or not.

You won't have a future if you allow anxiety about this situation to color your future performance. Buckle down and make certain that you are fully prepared from now on. Don't allow anything like this to happen a second time.

my school is the same way. i had classmates that were sent home for not being fully informed on their pt. diseases. We have to go to the hospital the day before clinicals to get pt. labs ( know why they are out of range), all meds info, illnesses, nursing duties for this pt specifically, reason for hospital stay and if we have IVs we must know the gtt or ml/hr at pre conference. It would take me all night to fill out this info and had to be back to be out the house by 430am just to get to the hospital early to see if anything changed on my pt because she wanted that too. In my program if you lacked any of this info and couldn't explain it to the teacher at pre conference you are sent home because "we aren't prepared to take care of our pt" and we can only miss one day of clinicals ( MISS TWO WE ARE OUT THE PROGRAM). So being that she is willing to give you an extra day that you can make up is normal. in the programs we must get a certain amount of hours of hands-on experience. its not weeding you out they just must follow the rules. good luck

If they were "weeding you out" they probably wouldn't have allowed you to makeup the time. Probably a little harsh, but I wouldn't put too much worry into it. Just make sure you are extra prepared next time

Geez, that sounds really harsh. I mean, it's been a minute since I've been in nursing school but I don't remember it being THAT harsh. Dang.

I agree, but regardless, I still have to make the say up... My group informed me that this matter was discussed at post-conference (which I found weird), and my instructor felt bad for that happening. I wrote them their journal, will make up the day, and make sure I know all of the procedures inside and out I guess... My peers think I am overreacting, perhaps it's true.

I don't think they are necessarily trying to weed you out. It isn't ideal of course, but just do the makeup & anything else they ask. This clinical too shall pass.

And how much will you be paying for the make up clinical? In my school if we missed a clinical day we had to do a make up day which cost additional $ out of our own pocket.
