Switching from General Medicine to Geriatric Rehabilitation?
Good evening! I am a recent graduate (March 2020) and have a relatively short tenure on my current position. I received a job offer for a position on a Geriatric Rehabilitation unit. Currently, I work on an acute medicine unit which also functions as the facility's ICU stepdown unit. The unit has several problems, including low staff morale, poor relationships between unit staff and management, high nurse/patient ratios, high staff and management turnover. On a personal level, I feel that general medicine is not for me; it does not allow me to build therapeutic relationships with my patients. The nature of acute medicine is fast admissions and fast discharges. Working in an ICU setting is not a goal of mine and has never appealed to me. Going to work everyday, I feel miserable. Walking in, the staff are angry after having a bad day which creates an awful feeling for starting a shift. I do not feel like I am working in my element and it ultimately feels like an unsafe practice environment. Rehab appeals to me as it seems to allow the opportunity to build therapeutic relationships with patients. My current manager is supportive of the job offer and had some surprisingly good things to say. If I accepted the rehab position, I would be allowed to retain a casual position on the medicine unit. My concern with the rehab unit would be trading one bad situation for another bad situation. Also, the fact that closing door of opportunity and locking them frightens me a bit. Can anyone share any thoughts about working in rehab, namely some pros and cons and the career limitations that it could provide? And any other advice would be greatly appreciated.

Sent home from clinical
I agree, but regardless, I still have to make the say up... My group informed me that this matter was discussed at post-conference (which I found weird), and my instructor felt bad for that happening. I wrote them their journal, will make up the day, and make sure I know all of the procedures inside and out I guess... My peers think I am overreacting, perhaps it's true. Cheers!

Sent home from clinical
I agree, but that is what the course leader is driving unfortunately. I did offer to take my coffee break early to go and research it, but they did not bite. So they said to write a journal and make up later, I am just unsure if I will have a future in this program or not. Thanks for your reply!

Sent home from clinical
Good morning, I was sent home from clinical this morning due to not being fully versed about a surgery that my patient had completed. I understand the rationale of being aware. I was required to revisit the hospital yesterday as my initial patient was discharged, and was assigned a new patient. I live in a small city, so it is not a major inconvenience to travel to the hospital and back home. My instructor informed me that I could do a makeup day in lieu of the day missed. I am wondering if I should be concerned about the school "weeding me out." I am seeking other students or former students experience's with this, as I am sure this happens regularly. I am not aware of any other students in my class experiencing this, though I may have not heard about it. I look forward to hearing what you have to say. Cheers!

I don't enjoy going to clinical
I apologize for the misunderstanding, but to clarify, I was only comparing to Grey's Anatomy as an example of the passion the doctor's felt, and not the work that they did. I realize real hospitals are not like Grey's Anatomy, now, and before I was a nursing student. I thank you for your input though. S

lateral violence in nursing school
I don't think that is normal for nursing schools. I do think that nursing schools are made for beginners, those of us who have no medical backgrounds. That kind of behaviour should be reported, and quite frankly, the ladies and gentlemen who are bullying you should be prevented from proceeding any further in the program, as there is enough bullying in the industry already.

How old is too old to begin nursing?
Congratulations on this choice! It is better to be a nurse at 61 than wishing you were a nurse at 61. If you have the opportunity to do it, as well as the drive to work at it, go for it! S

I don't enjoy going to clinical
I think that is true... You hear a lot of people being so excited for clinical, and I worry because I am just not excited. In fact, there are a few people in my clinical group who dislike going as much as I do... But you are right about it being a learning experience... We see on TV (ie, Grey's Anatomy) that the new doctors are so excited to go and learn things in their residency program.

I don't enjoy going to clinical
Hey! I am in my first year of actual nursing school, and mostly through my first clinical experience. We began in a care home, which I did not enjoy. We are in the hospital now, but I just don't feel excited going. I really enjoyed the patient I had last week, but I am not looking forward to going back. Any of your experiences would be helpful. Cheers, S
