Second semester and zero clinicals. I feel like I know nothing.

Updated:   Published

So I'm in an entry level master of science family nurse practitioner program.  I don't have a background in nursing.

My clinical rotation was canceled first semester and all my classes were online with 1/3 of the normal lab time to learn skills.  This semester we had all our classes moved to online including lab, and my clinicals have been canceled until next week.

I'm in between a rock and a hard place, I'm in my first year of my 4 year entry level nursing program and I feel terrible about it.  The amount of anxiety I have going to clinical next week is overwhelming because I have had literally no hands on experience.  All of my learning has been through zoom.  What am I supposed to tell the nurse I'm following?  My teachers seem drained and put in very little effort, and generally what I was once so interested in is fading.   Are there any other students that feel this way?  Or nurses that understand the current wave of students coming in are going to have very little hands on experience and been learning over zoom?

I had this whole vision that I was going to be learning with teachers and TA's and practicing with my classmates all the time, but the culture right now is the exact opposite.  I never see my class mates, even my clinical coordinator is always so stressed out and upset about work that our zoom sessions are tense and awkward.

Who would of thought covid would both burn out current nurses and hinder the quality of the incoming nurses so much.

Specializes in ER / ICU.

How did you get accepted into a FNP program with no nursing experience? I've never heard of such a thing!

(edit: no snarkiness intended- I feel for you, how overwhelmed you must be.)

Specializes in Nephrology, Cardiology, ER, ICU.

Direct entry APRN degrees are common in some areas of the US.

As to original poster (OP) direct entry programs are very fast-paced. What is the school's plan for clinicals for you?

You are the school's customer so asking these questions is definitely in your best interest. Best wishes
