I began nursing school in September and I must say I'm unsure of my ability to see this through. I've worked really hard to get to where I am taking nearly a year to do so. I just have a lot bearing down on me all of a sudden and I don't feel like I'm even there most of the time when I'm in class. I'm not sure what to do because I refuse to quit but I don't want to waste any time either. Has anyone else felt like this before?

Don't give up. It's perfectly normal to feel that way. In my case I just hung in there until I knew I'd be taking such a financial hit to quit that got me through until the end. One day at a time, one foot in front of the other and all that other corny sounding stuff really is true when it comes to nursing school.
If you haven't done so yet - take a really hard look at the rest of your life, the demands people are making on you, their expectations, your desire not to disappoint them etc and realize that you need to clear the decks as much as you possibly can and focus on your education. It won't always be that way. Those who are truly in your corner will understand. The best to you!

Oh, yeah! As others have already said and in a better way than I can, it's a matter of culture shock. As with any new experience, especially one of such total immersion as is nursing school, you will have quite an adjustment period and learning curve,. So will everyone else around you. Roll with it. We used to call it the DIHL -- Deer in the Headlights Look -- and everyone walked around with it the first few months.
Give it time. You'll find your rhythm.

I have been there...it is a horrible place to be, trust me. I took 2 years to get through a 1 year LPN program and I felt the same way through those two years. I failed a class my first semester and felt like giving up but, and I do not know why, I stuck with it. It was not my first class to retake either. Now I am an RN and in the process of advancing to the DNP. Looking back, I am so glad I stuck with it because I absolutely love being a nurse. I work in peds and every day is a blessing to help sick young people get healthy.
It can feel so dark and alone in nursing school because our friends do not understand what we go through. Nursing is no cake walk, it requires work and dedication because it is a life or death career. I know it is hard now, but try to look at what is a head. You sound strong and I feel you have thought about this a lot. Just know that many nurses out there have been in the same place as you, you are definitely not alone.

I am graduating in a month and a half, and EVERY. SINGLE. PERSON. in our class wishes they were somewhere else when we pull into the hospital parking lot at 6am. Being a nurse is everyone's dream, but the process of getting there is sometimes the stuff of nightmares. Just put your head down and take it day by day. It doesn't get easier, but the threshold for what you can tolerate rises exponentially.

I started school in July since then I've had so many ups and Downs and want to quit sometimes. But I think of my goal and keep pushing. I 1/4 way done. Half then time I have no idea what the teachers are talking about and clincals scare the crap out of me, but I know I can do it. So can you. Remind yourself everyday what goal is and how worth it it'll be after you graduate
Thanks for your input everyone, I really needed to know I wasn't the only one who's had these thoughts. One day at a time :-)

I started in September and lately I've been feeling the same way. It can be so overwhelming! I'm trying to remember to take it one day at a time as well. I joined this site today in hopes for inspiration and when I need help, it seems like people here are wonderful. Stay strong, we're with you!

Applied was not accepted. You are smart for getting in and you can do it !!. Cut back on things that give you extra stress and focus. Even if you end
Up with a C this semester you have so many more semesters to catch up, but don't drop or get kicked out. Good luck..

If I Can do it? then you can too!
Critical thinking is not an easy achievement but once you get hang of it then it's fairly easy.
My advices to you is that you should start doing a lot of questions. Questions after questions will train you to pick right answers for the exams which is definitely needed when it comes to NCLEX. If you are working at the healthcare settings, then you should not apply any of your reality into nursing school such as exams because what we do in reality is different from NCLEX which is our goal to pass right? Be social in class, make friends and study groups. If you don't understand something then somebody might be able to explain it to you and it goes other way around. It really is discouraging when you can't understand things, but hey! everything has a step. Just go step by step and don't try to rush things. You will be good to go in one year!:)
