Second-Entry Nursing Programs - 2014 Hopeful

Published

Hi Everyone!

I'm starting this topic for those who are applying to 2nd-entry programs, to start in 2014.

A bit about myself:

I'll be applying to University of Ottawa and University of Toronto.

Graduated with a Social Science degree from Ottawa U w/ 7.2 CGPA (aka 3.33 on 4.0 scale, or a B+)

A lot of community involvement in health promotion, youth counseling programs, women's health research..

Currently taking the prerequisites...

I'm kind of nervous about the applications because I know how competitive these programs are... Any advice from current 2-year BScN students would be great!

Let's get this thread going

Hi John, I was notified by email on March 17 and the admission letter came by mail a few days after that.

@mighty_atom Do you mind sharing your stats? :)

Sure. My overall undergrad GPA was a 3.6 I had to take a lot of prereqs for all the various nursing programs I applied to because my previous degree was in Film so was missing a lot of science and math. So I'm not sure how those get calculated, but I got all A's on my prereqs.

I'm an international student (from the USofA), although I don't think York takes that into consideration (unlike UofT). I had a decent amount of volunteer experience in the last few years, with some local orgs and while I was living in Japan as the regional charity and volunteer leader for the JET Program, but not much prior to that. I also applied to Western, Trent, and UBC. I got an offer from Trent and an interview offer from UBC. But like I said, aiming for UofT.

Does anyone know how UofT sends out their offers? Is it a continuous stream, like every day or close to that, or do they send them out in big batches less frequently?

I was accepted to second entry nursing at York on March 3rd...

Hey everyone,

I received an admission offer from UofT yesterday, March 26th! I am soooooo happy and excited! I also had a interview offer from UBC, but UofT is my first choice so I'll be moving to Toronto this summer! I wish all remaining applicants all the best and hope to meet some of you this fall. For any others also admitted, has someone started a Facebook page yet? I'd love to know who else will be a part of our Class of 2016! Also, I'm curious to know how many students they accept each year? One blog post said ~170, is that correct?

Regarding my stats, it's hard to know exactly how UofT calculated my academic standing but I think my cGPA was 3.7 (A-) and GPA in both my last 10 courses and prereqs was 7.75 (A/A-). I have a BSc in biology from UVic, where I did some undergrad research and worked as a field assistant. Honestly, I think my supplemental application is what carried me through. I worked really hard on it and think it demonstrated well why I was a good candidate. I've volunteered in women's shelters, childcare centres, therapeutic riding program for disabled kids, SPCA, and a few veterinary clinics. I also traveled overseas in my teens which broadened my perspective about the world, and links well with my interest in global health nursing. I think it is all how you demonstrated how your diverse work and life experiences make you a strong candidate, regardless if you did research or worked in a hospital.

Hey tongtong,

My JoinUofT still has a "To be reviewed" sign on it too. I'm so nervous!!! Does this mean they have yet to look at your application?

I've read several posts that make it sound like the JoinUofT site doesn't get updated very often, I wouldn't worry too much about what it says

I received my first offer this week - from Queen's. So happy to know that I will be studying nursing starting September! Love the uni, the program and the idea of continuing to volunteer with some organizations there but still tempted by the savings of living at home if UofT make me an offer.

Just started UofT Facebook group: Bloomberg Faculty of Nursing (UofT) - Class of 2016

Let me know if it works :)

@NursieWursie I am also in the same boat as you.. I really like the program at Queen's, but UofT would save money.. I guess it'll just depend if UofT accepts me or not.

I can't find it on FB...is the name correct? Or maybe it takes time for it to show up?

I followed the naming format of the pervious years. I made this just an hour ago.

Ah maybe this is why. My group status says it's pending because it's under the University of Toronto group. I think they need to OK my group first.
