Second Degree Seeking Student

Published

Hello everyone! I am hoping to apply to BSU's nursing program next year. In a few months I will be graduating with my bachelors in Healthcare Administration and Management, technically making me a second degree seeking student. I completed the first half of my degree at BSU and when my husband got transferred I had to finish at at Colorado State and it worked out well for us. My GPA from when I was BSU is a lousy 3.02 (I was not planning on nursing back then!) and my GPA from Colorado State is a 3.83.

Out of the 8 prereqs they require I have 4 As, 2 Bs and 2 Cs (psych and Chem). I feel that as competitive as the system is I don't look very appealing but I am not sure how differently they will view me as I already have a Bachelors in a healthcare field as well as my CNA. Will having a bachelors help me in the areas where my grades may not? Is it worth applying or should I retake those courses?

When it come to applying to nursing school C's are highly frowned upon :(. I think you should just retake the 2 classes you have the C's in during the summer and apply to a accelerated BSN program because your gpa and grades in your others prerequisite classes are very good. I think you will definitely get accepted some where. Good luck :)

It really depends on what criteria the school uses and how the average accepted applicant falls with regards to those criteria. In my experience, having a previous bachelor's doesn't matter very much. The criteria and how you fall in regards to them is what matters.

Honestly, healthcare administration is not really relevant to nursing - because it's business, whereas nursing is focused on clinical practice. So it is probably not going to give you an advantage. Every school has it's own set of criteria. Your best bet is to discuss this with a program advisor.

Good luck to you.
