I am a Registered Nurse for more than 2 years now. I applied to write the CRNE which is an exam for eligibility in British Columbia. However, I still need to undergo SEC Assessment. Has anyone experienced the same? If so what were the preparations needed? I will highly appreciate your suggestions.
I am back home again, unfortunately!
Sec assessment was quite ok.
Can`t say how it went, I never can, because of confusion after all exams, but I can tell that everybody at the assessment center is very kind and helpful, they really try to keep you relaxed.
I had some great conversations and got many needed information afterwards.
Triple jump assessment was ok, you don`t have to be feared!
They present you a case, and your job is to figure out basic nursing
interventions, than they ask you to interview e.g. a primary health care nurse
or family for further information, as well as what would be important for you
to know from medical record or any other source available.
The only thing you can prepare is pharmacology!
You are acting like used to it in your home country, and that`s what they want see.
Their aim is to verify if your nursing care and knowledge is equivalent to canadian nursing practice.
Don´t forget you will intuitively act the way you are familiar with.
That means your health assessment, physical examination and nursing procedures will be based on your personal knowledge and skills, it will be hard to prepare only by coursework.
Fundamentally is to keep as relaxed as possible, they don`t bite, and if you need upgrading then it is best for you!
That is my opinion and it helps me to beeing patient during the long waiting period after sec assessment.
For any other questions, feel free to contact me!
Best wishes!
Hi Mona77,
I am glad that you have survived :) and done your SEC and that you have got back home.
I really wish you that your SEC was good and you do not need to do any courses and if, then only on line :)
But i still would like to know some few more ditails. May be you wouldn't minde to tell me more??? :)
What exactly you have had to do??
1.written diagnostic exam??
2.Clinical judjment Asses.
3.Tripel Jump Asses.
4.Objectiv Structur Clinical Exam.
5.IEN Self-Assesment
Just let me know which from all this abow you had to do
And may be you can remeber how long does it took till CRNBC answered you that you can go to SEC. Thay sent me a letter with Time Scheudel, but its sounds like 3-4 monthes till thay send me to SEC, long time, my employer wouldnt wait so long i will lose my job offer
And one more question, i did my nurse Exam in Hessen 2008 and my Nursing school has no timetabels with exactly hours for each subject(exemp.: like wound and dressings 15h a.s.o) from my study so thay sent me to Regirungs presidium and thay there just sent general hours for "Themenbereich" so nothing exactly.
Looks like this

So my question to you, how was your Transkript with exact hours???
Only one thinhg what i can do it just send to CRNBC Rahmenlehrplan 160 pages with Stemp from Regirungs Presidium, but i really dont wanna know how much does it cost to translate all this pages!!!
Thank you in advance and hope to hear from you soon
HAve a nice day by by
In that situation you would be given a list of courses that will be required to bring your skills up to standard. These courses are to be taken at the authorized schools in the province where you had the SEC. It could, in theory, take up to a year to complete these requirements. All costs of this upgrading will be your responsibility.
Stelz,
you have to mail form 30 to the regional authority (Regierungspräsidium Hessen)
they will complete form 30 and mail the transcripts.
They will include general hours in all speciality areas (theory and practice) that are required by current law.
CRNBC will sent the transcripts back to you for translation!
A time period of 3-4 month is very idealistic, between application and scheduling assessment 9 month passed by.
CRNBC is backlogged and can't cope with all the applications.
Though you are educated in Germany, be sure to take SEC Assessment!
I had a general assessment (medical-surgical).
Self assessmennt will be send via e-mail through IENBC ( Kwantlen Polytechnic University). You will have to answer questions like, how you show accountability for your own actions!
Written exam Part 1 consists of medication calculations, pharmacology and general nursing knowledge e.g. pt with acute asthma attack - what are your priority actions.
Part 2 multiple choice CRNE style.
Clinical judgement scenarios are short case studies you have to answer, go through the scenarios provided in the SEC assessment package.
Triple jump is a case study too and an example is included in the package - it is similar to our german written exam ( Analyse, Charakterisierung, Hypothese, Pflegeintervention, Pflegeplanung und Implementierung evtl Erfolgskontrolle).
OSCE: someone will role play a patient and you are the nurse caring for that patient, including health history, assessment, nursing procedures like administering medications, i.v. tubing, s.c.+ i.m. injection or/and changing wound dressing.
One more information, for the translation of my transripts I had to pay 220 Euro

Hi MONA77
I am very apriciate that you answered in ditails, its very halpfull but sitll frightning :)
How long have you prepeared your self????

And jus one more question just for clarification.
You had to do: General Medical Surgical Nursing
ALL tests??? sucks!!!!!
How many scenarios you have had on each test Clinical judgment?? Tripel Jump??
What have you had on OSCE i.m i,v. s.c tubing???? TUBING !!!!!(Intubation?) Damn i have never done!!!
Have you took Vital signs apical puls etc??? Chest assesment???
I dont know where i should start to learn i went throu VitalSigns but really dip and noticed many differences between germany and canada, now going to go to physical examination,
it seems to be that i have to by pharmacology book. damn it would be expansiv.
I do not want to be naughty, but may be you can give me a copy of all this exampels what thay have had sent to you
I have downloaded some of them from Mntro Royal College, but thay seems to be different from BC.
But just one question you havent done anything like maternal/new born, Pediatric???
But i still hope that you done all this tings well and don't need courses or only on-line courses.
let me know when you get your results of SEC from CRNBC
And how do you know that CRNBC overloaded??? :) do you have insider???:)
Are you still working in germany or you live alredy in BC, your english is very very good, how comes???
Thank you in advanse, and look forward to your answer

Hello Stelz,
I was scheduled only for general sec assessment therefore they focused on medical/surgical nursing.
I'm still working in Germany, money wants to be earned!
You can do a lot to improve your English skills without spending money on additional courses etc.
Though I am an avid reader, I read one english book per week, watching news and documentations in english and trying to find english speaking communication partners.
Three textbooks (current edition) can be recommended, Canadian Fundamentals of Nursing, Medical/Surgical - Canadian edition CRNE Prep Guide and a drug guide- I have purchesed Davie's Drug Guide.
My assessor sent me an e-mail that they are backlogged and it will take longer to review my file.
On December the 1st, I received my final assessment and I will have to the Psychomotor Skill Review in Surrey, a 4- day workshop - that was part of my self assessment at the end of day two.
I was honest and told my assessor that I felt unsure with the different kinds of infusion systems, syringes, medical and nursing equipment like wound dressing kit catheterization kit etc. and differing hygenic standards - in Germany you work autamatically because these interventions are your daily routine - this routine you will miss during OSCE.
They will ask you at the end of the assessment, where you'll think you may need supplementary education or training! Be honest and critical!
After the workshop I am eligible for provisional registration and while working on provisional registration I should take the online module Nursing in Canada!
So, next year I will be twice in Canada, because in June my husband and I will travel the Yukon - an outdoor trip- and for the workshop I will have to go the Vancouver!
Best wishes!
once you are notified that you require SEC assessment, is there a time limit for you to do the assessment from the time they notified you? coz i am planning to apply for RN registration and I am still in my home country. I won't be moving to Canada until April of next year. I'm just wondering What Ifs.
Hi janels,
yes, they gave me a timelimit - SEC Assessment should be completed within a year!
Do you have permanent residency?
If not, it is not recommended to move to BC prior eligibility of provisional registration.
My application process lasts from September 2009 till know - and I still have to complete
supplementary education....
Best wishes.
Stelz
