Seattle University BSN (Transfer) Applicants 2014

Published

I didn't find any threads on Seattle University BSN for Fall 2014; just wanted to know who else is applying!

I love the UW program but I was definitely torn between attending SU or UW. I know a professor at SU and so I was able to learn a lot about their program, so when I was accepted at UW I had a tough decision to make. At the end of the day, I'm glad I chose UW because of all the opportunities a large research institution has to offer. Obviously, SU has an amazing program so if you are accepted to both programs you should look at what matches your goals and learning style. At UW I have been able to do some undergrad research, participate in student run organizations, have an awesome community health rotation, and I studied abroad in India. However, you have to take into account that our school is a research institution, so our professors are simultaneously working on their own research projects while they are teaching. I happen to love this environment because I feel that I'm learning the next generation of nursing. SU is more teaching based, so the professors are solely devoted to you, the student. The way it was explained to me by one of their professors is that they really do hold their student's hand through the program, more so than UW. But both programs want to ensure you succeed, in fact, if you fail a test you don't have to leave the program, which is very different from most of the ADN programs, you just repeat that quarter with the following cohort. The lecture classes are about the same at both UW and SU (about 95 per class), and clinical/lab groups are 10-12. Also, don't let tuition scare you. SU offered me a $13,000 merit scholarship automatically just for having a strong gpa and UW has offered me financial aid (unless this is your second bachelors) on top of my GI Bill benefits that I was able to use for living expenses. I know a lot of people who rather attend an ADN program because of the cost saving, but there are so many ways to find financial help. Plus, ADN programs are 6 quarters and so is UW! I hope this helps a little, and anyone can PM if they have more questions. I remember what a stressful time this was, and I remember how much talking to others on this board helped me get through these rough few weeks.

I threw my hat in the ring at SU as well. Admittely, PLU is my first choice (I live in Puyallup, and I really just want to go to PLU), but SU is definitely a close 2nd.

I'm coming in with a 3.95 DTA degree (Highline); not quite 4.0 on the prereqs (3.9 on Ochem--4.0 everywhere else); 15 years experience in healthcare, working with people with intellectual and developmental disabilities. I've been a training instructor for the last 5 years, teaching new employees. I teach Fundamentals of Caregiving, CPR/First Aid, Dementia Specialty, Mental Health Specialty, D.D. Specialty, and a few others. I'm also a CNA.

Found out today I didn't get accepted to UW, which I was very surprised. I'm not getting my hopes up for SU. :/

brooke don't lose hope! forums i've followed before applicants were rejected from SU and accepted to UW and vice versa. Don't count your self out just yet!

Hey all you SU applicants! Don't loose hope about getting in. And not getting into UW doesn't mean anything. SU doesn't care as much about your experience. They are more interested in why you want to be a nurse. So here is some of the info I wanted to know when I was in your shoes last year: The transfer cohort accepts 80-90 students for the fall--all transfer. I saw a few posts that said they only accept 5--that is SPU, not SU. My cohort started at 88 (we are now down to 82). Most of us are transfer students either from community colleges with a transfer degree or already with a bachelor's degree from another university. There are a lot with NA-C experience, but there are also many that have no experience at all. They sent out acceptance letters the last week of March. I think I got mine the 27th or the 28th. I had not completed Micro or the Math 118 requirement when the application was due. I do know other people that didn't get in the year before because of classes not completed, but got in with my cohort, so they must judge that on an individual basis. I applied to UW, SPU and SU. I only got into SU. They did give me scholarships/grants which cut the tuition down by half, so don't let the private school tuition scare you away. It is a great program. The instructors are very supportive and they all want everyone to succeed. Good luck everyone!

@ brooke.phaganLPN do not loose hope yet! I didn't get accepted to UW, but got into SU. They each have different criteria for what students they look for. Just because UW didn't see your potential doesn't mean SU will over look you also.

@armynurse i messaged You ! ^^ @CsweetMCsweet thank you for your words of encouragement =)

csweet, thank you for the encouragement!

I know SU required you to take Math 118 for prerequisite. Can anyone tell me what Math 118 is? When I look through the class equivalency guide on SU website the class they tell me that is equivalent to my school doesn't exist.

I went to Everett CC for my prereqs and the equivalent class for Seattle U Math 118 was Math 138-applied college algebra.

At Seattle U it is called business college algebra. probably whatever college algebra class your school has for non-math majors would work. and a regular college algebra class would definitely fill the requirement.

shoot. I misspelled loose in my first post...i meant lose, dangnabit!

The wait is killing me. I thought I would share my stats. I have a 3.4 prerequisite gpa and not sure what my all around gpa is because I have to transfer in from more than one school. I have over a year of lpn experience. I had 2 outstanding classes at the time of application.

The wait is killing me as well, it's going to be so hard opening that SU letter whether I get accepted or rejected...And yes SU's Math 118 is College Algebra.

Thank you so much csweet for giving us hope from your previous post about SU! I'm really hoping to get into SU and only heard amazing things about their nursing program and campus!! I also applied to SPU and I believe they only accepted 5 transfer students, BUT I also heard they changed it up this year and are adding more slots for transfer students, but do not take my work on it, I don't know how true it is. Also anyone else apply to SPU and hear back about the interview on Feb. 22? I haven't received anything about it and starting to doubt my chances at SPU...

Good luck to everyone, hang in there!
