SDSU Fall 2011 Admission Hopefuls

Anyone hear anything from the school/school of nursing yet? Anxiously waiting here..

I'm not familiar with what needs to be done with your international experiences. I know that there are many choices offered over the course of your time in nursing school, and that they would need to be completed by graduation. I believe that there are opportunities in Switzerland, Thailand, India, and they were working on Argentina. There are trips during the summers and winter breaks. As far as details, though, I honestly have no idea. I think it's great, though, that you get to experience that! :)

I'm hunting for the list of supplies, R_Clemens. I haven't forgotten about you!

I know that there are short term study abroad opportunities that have been posted on the school of nursing website, but I think you can really do your study abroad program through any program you want (sdsu has plenty of options for this). If you go to the College of Health and Human Services they can help answer your questions there because I believe the new study abroad requirement is for all schools that fall under the College of Health and Human Services. There they can tell you whether or not you have to complete the study abroad requirements and different options you might have when it comes to when and where you are able to go. As far as when the study abroad has to be completed I THINK it's before you graduated, but I would double check to be sure.

I have just became a new member of all nurses.

Throughout reading these posts, how am I supposed to attend orientation and two day workshop if I live up north? Just like one poster, I am unable to commute back and forth. This now leaves me to rent out a motel/hotel for 3 days because the dorms don't open up until the 27th. This will seriously kill my bank. Is there any other option or could we appeal to the nursing program?

It just seems I am breaking my bank every week due to this program (physical, orientation, tuition increase)

First, welcome to allnurses! This site is invaluable! :)

I would recommend calling the School of Nursing and talking with them. They will most likely tell you that the orientation is mandatory, and that you need to be there. I know there was another student in this thread who was coming from out of the country. Perhaps the two of you could share hotel costs?

The first semester will be your most expensive, what with supplies and all the initial start-up costs. It tends to make you a bit nutty (at least it did me), and I admire those of you coming in from other locations. Trust me, it's worth it! :redpinkhe

Okay, R_Clemens,

Here is a partial list of things that can be bought at orientation. I forgot the major part, your ID badge!!! :yeah:This is an old form, so I don't want to list prices here in case my new forms have something different. I should be receiving those shortly.

The starter kit that I mentioned earlier (mandatory at orientation)

ID Badge (mandatory at orientation)

Stethoscope (mandatory but can be purchased anywhere)

Dove uniform (mandatory at orientation)

Clipboard (optional but SO worth it!)

Adult blood pressure cuff (optional, but worth it to practice on your friends lol)

"SDSU School of Nursing" polo shirts (optional but worth it, because you can wear these to the hospital the day before clinical when you pick out a patient)

Thank you for this information. I'm a bit curious thou how most of these items add up to $1,200.00. I was hoping that you added the prices from last year or estimated them to the best of your ability. I did a calculation and most of them seem as if its only $500.00 at most.

What about the ipod touch n all of that other groovy stuff?

Books. Those are what cost the most, especially first semester. I think I paid around $800, if not more. As the semesters go on, you're more easily able to order your books online for less money.

The iTouch, which I don't believe you will need, cost me another $185. The uniforms were $200-ish. The supply kit is around $125.

People get shell-shocked the first semester, but we tell them to remember that the scrubs last for five semesters, and you don't need supply kits every semester. (Second semester you pay around $40 for the IV kit, but that's it.)

uh, I thought somebody here has said that we were able to choose our own clinical & lab times?

I was chosen for Saturday's group and unfortunately, I can't do it on Saturday. I have work on that day and I HAVE to work regardless of how rigorous the work load is because of family obligations. Coriander, is there anything we can do for that?

I might have to just drop out altogether, I can't afford to miss work at all. Do we even get to choose our own lab times later on the semesters?

AAAHHHHHHhhHHHSKLDJLKJSDFLJDFSLJDFS, I can no longer take Calculus!!!!!

Shelia, I am sorry for your unwanted placement. But, I also want the answer if we'll be able to select our own schedule for later semesters...

Coriander, I have one last question and I will no longer post anymore on allnurses...

What are the scheduled set of classes we are supposed to take during the first semester? I know Nurs200, 203 etc. what's the rest?

Coriander, I express my sincerest gratitude for your replies. G'luck with everything1

Whoa, what? I thought that the student advisor said that you would be able to pick your classes first semester? Where's that post?

Clinical sections are assigned for later semesters. There have been some cases of people being able to trade, so PLEASE check into that if you have been assigned a day that is impossible. I am not promising that you will be okayed the trade, but it's worth a shot. There is always a lot of scuffling around trying to work things out, for every semester, all clinicals.

R_Clemens, you are always welcome to ask questions! Oh my goodness, that's how I survived. LOL. Let's see. You are going to be taking 200, 202, 206, and 208. Informatics, Assessment, Fundamentals, and Pathophysiology, in that order. :)

Hi Coriander,

I was just wondering how often our clinical sites change. Is it just one hospital per semester?

Thanks!

Also, are we allowed to switch clinical location? The other hospital is a shorter drive from where I live.
