SDSU Fall 2011 Admission Hopefuls

Anyone hear anything from the school/school of nursing yet? Anxiously waiting here..

Yeah I'm usually the same way hahaha. Although, I can study (mainly review) with 1-2 other people, but usually no more than that. I heard from a nursing student in her last semester that she always studied alone, but everybody did horrible on their first test because they tried studying alone... and the only way to do well in nursing school is to study in groups. I guess I just wanted to know how true that was :). I had a study partner for a few of my classes, but we would still study by ourselves. It was helpful just to review and test each other, and not too distracting because there was only two of us. I agree though, studying with too many people just gets to be too much!

So many people say that they usually study alone, but once they got into nursing school, that changed. There are a billion people in the library at any time studying, but I was never able to focus with all the activity.

I tell people to try both, and see how they do. Many people find that their first exams were their worst.

Also, with our mentor program, we encourage studying with your mentor, who is a more advanced student (if you sign up for it). They are there to give you some hints to remember things, or give you ideas on how you might do things differently if what you've been doing hasn't worked so well. :)

I'll have to sign up for that then :) haha. Thank you for answering all of my questions! Only a month till orientation!

I highly recommend it. :)

You're welcome! I can't believe it's just a month away!

Have a great day, Quob, I have to get ready for my 12-hour night shift. Oh, yeah. :p

You have a great day too and good luck with your 12 hour shift!! :) Thanks again!!

Hello Everyone!

I am also starting the BSN program @ SDSU this Fall. I just accidentally stumbled across this website while browsing the internet... How lucky! I've read through all of the posts and had many questions answered already. What a great resource, I will log in often! See you around! -Jenny

Welcome, Jenny, to allnurses and to SDSU! :yeah: This site was a huge help for me when I started the program. I'm glad it's been helpful to you, too. I look forward to meeting you at Orientation!

Hi Coriander, I am transferring from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill as I am triple majoring in Business, Nursing, and Engineering. So, while I take my courses for Nursing at SD State, I am also taking online classes at University of San Diego for Business and 2 engineering classes from UCSD. Basically, I'm going to be a student at all three schools in SD, HAHAHAHAHAHAHA. Do you think this is scholastic suicide or is it still possible? FYI, I am also a servant who is able to recollect all her memories, thoughts, and emotions at the moment. I have the innate ability to read an entire book and remember it word for word. Should I still do it?

I know this may be inappropriate to ask, but how is the party scene at SDSU? In other words, how is the social scene on campus? its safe to say that I am a party girl. Please do not assume that I am not a hard worker though as well!

Is Nursing 202 our clinicals? Also, the clinicals don't begin on the first week right?? If so, which week does it begin? I have read some of the posts here and I have Saturday as well. Our clinical location/times/groups all change semester to semester right??

Are you taking all of those classes this semester? Or spreading them out throughout the program? People have double-majored and done fine, and I am in awe of them. :)

What are you planning on doing with the combination of the three degrees? I'm curious.

Nursing 202 is the Assessment class, which includes a laboratory session. 206 has the clinicals in addition to lecture. Clinicals in the hospitals don't begin until about halfway through the semester for you, however there are "practice" clinicals in the Skills Lab for the first half of the semester which will be taught by your instructor.

Yes, clinicals change every semester, and most semesters you will have clinicals at more than one location for different classes. Your first two semesters you have clinical in one location, and then in third semester you will go somewhere for Labor and Delivery, and to the Childrens Hospital for pediatrics. Fourth semester, you will have three clinical days. Fifth semester, I think there are two.

when are we doing the background check/drug test? On the website, it says we need to do it 4 weeks before school of nursing orientation. and this week is 4 weeks before the orientation. are we supposed to wait until we are told or... ?

^^^ BUMPPP

1) Since most of our classes are set to begin at 7:00 A.M. How do we go about eating for breakfast? How did you go about doing it, Coriander? Did you wake up extra early to cook for yourself and took your time to eat? Purchase food and ate on the way to class? The cafeteria on campus does not open until 7 A.M. which is the same time the class starts. How did most of the nursing students eat breakfast? I need this to be answered or else my stomach will be growling all day.

2) Are the practice clinicals you are speaking of mandatory?

3) How rigorous is the first semester? Would I be able to participate in social events, activities, and extracurricular activities?

4) What is the app we need to download for our ipod touch/smart phone called specifically?

Wannabeee,

Where do you see on the website that we need to start our background check 4 weeks before orientation? I looked at the acceptance email we were sent, and it says:

"Plan on signing up for your Background Check in early August (please no sooner-it's done on-line) and come into Hardy Tower, Rm. 54 to pick up your Drug Form no later (and no sooner) than mid August (ID required). IMPORTANT: Due to the clinical sites requesting information several weeks prior to attending clinicals, you must start your background check no later than mid August. Failure to meet requested deadlines could result in dismissal from the program."

I would imagine that we will be emailed once we should start our background checks, but you could always call and find out :).
