SDSU Fall 2011 Admission Hopefuls

Published

Anyone hear anything from the school/school of nursing yet? Anxiously waiting here..

For verification purposes, does the two day workshop take place following the general BSN orientation (22 & 23)?

1) Since most of our classes are set to begin at 7:00 A.M. How do we go about eating for breakfast? How did you go about doing it, Coriander? Did you wake up extra early to cook for yourself and took your time to eat? Purchase food and ate on the way to class? The cafeteria on campus does not open until 7 A.M. which is the same time the class starts. How did most of the nursing students eat breakfast? I need this to be answered or else my stomach will be growling all day.

I am not much of a breakfast person, so would pack a bunch of snacks and eat them during breaks. I would wake up early, though, just to get my brain started and make sure I had everything for the day. Some mornings a bunch of us would go through the nearby Jack in the Box just so we had some fuel. :)

2) Are the practice clinicals you are speaking of mandatory?

Yes, the practice clinicals for 206 are mandatory. The 397 Skills Lab is mandatory to register for, but not mandatory to attend.

3) How rigorous is the first semester? Would I be able to participate in social events, activities, and extracurricular activities?

I found the first semester relatively rigorous, simply because it was so different than regular GE classes. There is a lot of information, but it's not just all memorization. It's theory and how to apply nursing practice.

However, yes. Please participate in social events and other activities. We have a lot of things through our university's nursing student association, and there are a ton of activities on the main campus, too. :D It's important to have some de-stress time.

4) What is the app we need to download for our ipod touch/smart phone called specifically?

It's called Nursing Central. And it's amazing.

The two day workshop, as far as I know, takes place following the School of Nursing New Student Orientation which is on the 23rd.

Coriander,

In regards to the ipod touch, do you think it matters which generation you have? I have a 1st generation itouch, and just want to make sure that it will still work okay for what is needed. Thanks! :)

I think I have the 1st generation, too. Or 2nd. Whatever the 8MB is. It works great!

Happydayz, congratulations! :yeah:Welcome to the nursing program. :D

The most important things that you will be purchasing are your ID badge ($12), supply kit (approx $125) and your uniforms (approx $240, including tax). The uniforms are put on a credit card, since you order them online. The supply kit and ID badge are cash or check, and will be purchased at orientation.

I'm sure this has been addressed already, but could you please list every single item or supply required assuming that you have nothing! Also, include all of the optional supplies. Include the estimated price tag if the exact price is unknown.

Some of the students have told me to buy this and not that. The faculty tell me to buy this. This board is all over the place because some things are optional and severely required. I want you to list every single thing we might need or want.

From reading these posts, I know you need the textbooks, student ID badge, student kit, uniforms, nursing central app, ipod touch, external hard drive, laptop, printer ink, stethoscope, the board, anything else?

I just want to purchase most of the things right now except for the items that are exclusively sold during orientation, so I won't carry the burden of buying things later.

The Nursing Central app really takes it home with its expensive price tag.

Please list every single item even if its not offered at the orientation.

I only have a 6GB iPhone 3GS. Will this suffice or am I going to have to invest in an iTouch as well?

Jessica, I'm not ignoring you... things came up fast with family and work, and I'm dealing with a lot of stuff outside the house right now. I will try and post as much as I know when I have a second.

Jennalynn, you should be okay with that, but please don't quote me on that. It seems a lot of people are changing their minds with how things are being run this semester.

Just letting you guys know that I called and found out that we won't get an email prompting us to start our background checks, and that we can start them now.

Can someone explain to me how the clinical process works?

I have my schedule all worked out but someone in the nursing program at san marcos told me that even though I go to school 4 days a week, i'll probably have clinicals on 2 of my "days off"

How long do clinicals last and how many x per week do we attend? I was under the impression that the clinicals were apart of our lab schedule, but now I am second guessing that.

Your first semester you will have one clinical day. You will also have a "Lab" for N202. For example, my first semester I had classes on Tuesdays and Thursdays with my clinical on Monday and my 202 lab on Tuesday evenings.

Your second semester you will have two consecutive clinical days at the same facility. I had classes on Mondays, all day, and then clinicals Tuesdays and Wednesdays.

Your third semester, you will have two clinical days for two different classes. I had class on Tuesday and Thursdays, and clinicals on Wednesday afternoons and Fridays.

Fourth semester you will have three clinical days for three different classes. I will have class Tuesdays and Thursdays with clinical days on Monday, Wednesday and Friday.

Fifth semester I'm not sure about but we can find out for you at NSO. :)

ETA: Clinicals vary in length week-wise. This is because of various training modules or holidays. Clinical hours per day also vary. They range about 5-8 hours. Some clinicals are in the afternoon, some are on the weekends, and some are at night.
