Anyone hear anything from the school/school of nursing yet? Anxiously waiting here..
Hey everyone!
So this is good news that we will be able to pick our lab times because there is a possibility that I will have to be commuting from an hour away to school. Coriander, do you think it is a good idea to commute, or do you think it is necessary to live near school while in the nursing program? I'm having a hard time figuring out what I should do. Thank you in advance!
Hi anlido :)
I think it would be fine for you to commute if you're okay with getting up that early! LOL.
It would probably be a great idea for you to do a couple of practice runs. Classes start at 7 a.m. as do clinicals. At 7 in the morning there isn't a big deal with parking that I remember.
We have people all over the county. Where are you coming from? :)
Coriander,
I would be coming from Temecula, so just about an hour north. But thank you, that makes me feel better. I just wasn't sure how much time I would have to dedicate to studying while at school with study groups and things. But I also had another question, I hear a lot of people say that you should not work at all while in the nursing program, since you've been in the program a while, what is your opinion about having a part time job while in the SON? Thanks again!
I have received the e-mail from ---- about our immunizations and our physicals. I understand that we must immediately submit our immunizations, but I just need to finish up one left. Is there a mandatory deadline for this?
Reason I am asking here is because the SON is closed right now and on weekends. Should I submit my immunization records now if I have not completed the Hepatitis A series or should I just wait?
Also, are we allowed to conduct our background check right now? How about the drug test as well, could we just finish that now? I don't want to wait until August to have my compliance cleared, I want to keep the ball rolling now!
There is something I don't quite understand..
"After you have successfully Faxed your immunization paperwork, you can call and make an appointment to be seen (to have your physical or to complete/update your immunizations, etc.) NO SOONER THAN THREE (3) WEEKS AFTER THE DATE THE PAPERWORK IS FAXED. For instance, if you faxed your paperwork on July 11, you can make an appointment for August 1 or later, if you faxed your paperwork on July 15, you can make your appointment for August 5 or later.
**IMPORTANT** If you make an appointment to be seen within the three week processing time, it will be cancelled and you will no longer be given priority. You will then fall in line behind as many as 5000 SDSU students! So please follow the above guidelines carefully!"
Priority for what...? Registration? So if I make an appointment within the three weeks, how does it affect me?
Are we supposed to make an appointment if my physical is already complete? What if I am missing an immunization? Could I just finish that with my personal physician or is that what the appointment is for?

Temecula! I'm going to be up there tomorrow for a concert. I love it; it's a beautiful area. We have study groups all the time as well as studying with a mentor, BUT, you could always schedule those into your calendar. :)
I would suggest just taking first semester as it is, without working. Many of us started working as nursing assistants after our third semester. Several people do have part-time jobs and do fine, but that is one thing you will hear over and over... "Concentrate on nursing school." I always tell the new nursies that you have to decide what to do based on what you can handle. We're all wired differently! :)
Hi Coriander,I would like to ask if we can do our physical exam before the nursing orientation? Thanks!
YES!!!!!!!!! But, there IS a form you will need your doctor to fill out. Go to nursing.sdsu.edu, and on the right you will find "Compliance Info". Print out the health clearance form to bring to your doctor to sign off. Same thing if you're getting your immunizations or titres through your own doctor.
Does that help? :)

The drug test and background check will be done soon, however you will be notified as when to do that. It's all very organized and needs to be done when you're told. It's a very simple process but will be done at a later date.
Submit your immunization records now, definitely. That way you can get those in the system. Health Services gets really bogged down with incoming students needing immunizations, and the nursing program gets a special slotted time for things, that is what they're talking about with losing your space in line. You still need to see the nurse to make sure you have everything. She will be issuing you your compliance slip sometime during the first several weeks of the semester, and needs to go over your imm. records and all of that.
If you are getting your immunizations through your doctor, go ahead and get those started. It is a series-of-two, so the sooner started, the better. The minute you have him initial that you had the first one, go ahead and send that in, too. However, make sure that you make that appointment for at least three weeks, the way it was mandated in the e-mail.
It all kind of makes your brain twinge, doesn't it?
You are all on top of things, and it's great to see!
Dear Coriander,
I don't understand the 3 weeks thing. I have immunization record from when I was a child, and brought them to the immunization center at student health and services earlier today. I was given a list of immunizations I still need, and was planning on getting those done this coming week... probably on tuesday through my own doctor, and then turning them on on thursday. I thought the 3 week wait was only intended if you are using sdsu so you get priority when getting your immunizations and physical. Would waiting 3 weeks matter if I'm using my own doctor?
"Since Student Health Services has very generously agreed to make the nursing students a priority, the School of Nursing has agreed to the following rules:
After you have successfully Faxed your immunization paperwork, you can call and make an appointment to be seen (to have your physical or to complete/update your immunizations, etc.) NO SOONER THAN THREE (3) WEEKS AFTER THE DATE THE PAPERWORK IS FAXED. For instance, if you faxed your paperwork on July 11, you can make an appointment for August 1 or later, if you faxed your paperwork on July 15, you can make your appointment for August 5 or later.

How could I fall behind 5000 SDSU students if I'm not using SDSU to get the rest of my immunizations and my physical and am instead using my own doctor?
Thanks!!
Hi quob!
I honestly and truly believe you will be fine should you go through your doctor for everything and fax it all in. It's my own tendency to be really, REALLY sure that things have gone through, especially when it comes to things like immunizations and nursing school stuff. People tend to lose me in the paper trail . That is why I suggested making the appointment.
So, are you all getting excited? You're going to be a great class!!
Hi, Coriander
I have confusion about appointment for immunization stuff. Just like others said, we can't make an appointment no sooner than three weeks after I submit my paperwork. Does that mean I need to wait 3 weeks to call them Or I can call them right after I turn my paperwork and just make an appointment for August 1 or later.
Oh! I don't have a CPR certification. Where did you take a class at?
Thank you for your time J
Coriander,
I didn't fax in my immunizations... instead I brought them into the office for that very reason! I want to make sure they get them. I am going through my own doctor because it will be cheaper that way, so I was planning on just running down to their office to give them the updated immunization information versus faxing it all. Does this mean I have to wait 3 weeks to give them proof of my newly updated immunizations? Because the "appointments" are just for getting shots and physicals, right? Sorry for all the questions, but I just want to make sure I don't do anything wrong! Thank you!!!!

I read that as you can make the appointment for 3 weeks out, you don't have to wait 3 weeks to make the appointment.
I went through http://www.getstarcpr.com/home.html for my CPR class. We had a great time . You can take yours anywhere, just make sure that you get the CPR class for healthcare providers. :)

I'm happy to be able to (attempt to) answer your questions. I received a lot of help when I was a new student from this board, and am thrilled to be here for you. I'm glad to hear you brought in your immunizations. As far as bringing in the new ones, I don't have an answer for you. The appointments are to make sure that everything has been sorted out, as far as I can remember, whether or not you get the immunizations done that day. Would you be able to give them a call on Monday and ask the Information Desk what to do? I would hate to give you a wrong answer and put you behind the 5,000 students they like to talk about. LOL

Thank you so much for answering the most important question! I will e-mail the rest of the Board and let them know, so we can all be on the same page for orientation.
