Schools in NYC/nursing advice

Nursing Students Pre-Nursing

Published

Hi there,

I'm currently in the dental field and absolutely hate it. I've always wanted to go into nursing (OB to be exact), but I've felt like I needed to stay within my field bc that's all I know. (I've been doing this for 10years).

My goal is to become an OB nurse in a clinic. I don't really want to work in the hospital. Then become a WHNP.

I really hate what I do to the core. So I was thinking, maybe I could start from the bottom and work my way up? Go for CNA ( to get the heck out of my field and get some nursing experience), then start my prerequisites?

I just hate the fact that I'm older and starting his later. I'm 30 with no college degree. So I will be in school for like 7 years .

Does se anyone know where I could start my prereqs in the NYC area? I live in Brooklyn,NY. Also any advice, suggestions, positive motivation? ☺️

Thanks ❤️

When you're 37, seven years will have passed and you'll be that much older whether or not you have your nursing degree. Many of us are non-traditional students, so you're in good company. Look to community colleges to do your prerequisites and get cracking! ☺

I am 35 now and will be starting my prerequisites in Jan '17. I have 2 kids and work full time as a phlebotomist and freelance as an IBCLC. It's ok to start later; I have the drive and maturity now that I didn't possess in my youth. I will be doing pre-reqs with CUNY and go from there. Good luck to you!

I spent 12 years in my previous career and will start nursing school in January (I'll be 35 this year and have 2 kids). As much as you may hate your job, my advice to you would be to save your money doing a job you hate to quit when you start nursing school. Do all your prereqs when working so you will have some money to last you through the ~two years of NS. I wish I could have done it that way. But unfortunately I had to leave my job and couldn't stay and and do work/school. good luck on your journey. I wish I started at 30 :) you are not alone with your change of career! Many of us on AN will be or are second career nurses!!

Thank you so much for Sharing your story ☺️
