Here in Portland, the Multnomah ESD hires LPN's. I have thought about going back to working for a school (I worked with special needs students for 3 years), but the pay is better at the LTC, I now work at. Plus, I love my job. I left the school due to a move to Portland.

just wanted to post that i don't think the esd hires lpns as the "school nurse" but they are hired for specific special needs kids. (i know this because i was a school health assistant for mesd for a few years it was a really nice service dist. to work for!)
Oops! You are correct. LPN's aren't hired as School Nurses, they are Health Assistants. It's still a great job, for an LPN.:imbar
Thanks for the info.

I am a LPN school nurse in FL. My title is school nurse. I was a camp nurse the last two summers, and my hospital peds experience gives me the edge in my postion. I know things are different in each state. Have a Good Day

I am a LPN and a school nurse here in MO. I have worked as a nurse for 6-8th grade for the last 4 years. During the last 2 1/2 years the nurse at our high school has been a LPN. So yes, schools do hire LPNs. I have also been to many meetings of school nurses/public health nurses where there were LPNs working as school nurses.

I have been a school nurse in Alabama public schools for 3 years now. All states are different but in Alabama new laws were passed that only LPN's or RN's can do invasive procedures. School Aides that were doing caths,g-tube feedings, trach care, etc. can no longer legally do this. If a child has glucagon orders there has to be a LPN or RN at school and even on field trips at all times. We are hired under Special Education LPN or RN/Aide. Get it? Aide. Yep we do everything from changing a g-tub to singing the "itsy bitsy spider". Some nurses work out of Health Rooms and skip most of the "aide" work. I enjoy both so I am happy. I prefer a Health Room job but I do not mind doing nursing and school aide work so it works for me. Pay for LPN Special Ed. Nurse is about $10.00 to $13.00 depending on the school system and experience level in years of the nurse. We also get Board of Education benifits. So , check with your state.

I have worked for the past 14 years as a school nurse and I am an LPN.
My starting pay was $12,000 per year (10 months). I now earn $31,000 per year (10 months). I know I might be able to earn more somewhere else, but this is like having my cake and eating it too. I love it !

I was wondering if you knew, about the Houston area and if they hire LPN's. I would love to go into school nursing. I am currently working at a hospital on a med/surg floor while i am going back to school to receive my RN, and i hate hospital nursing. :) Thanks
