National Certification for School Nurses
Well, I took the leap and signed up for the Feb. test in Syracuse. I am moving to NC next year and the school nurses there need a certification. I figured I'd better get it. I'm a bit nervous as there's no study manual...esp after the nurses who posted previous have taken the test and not passed. Jeez...I guess all my years of school nursing experience won't guarantee me a passing grade...and don't you want to pass paying $250.00!!! I'm going to study from a few school nursing books/manuals I've picked up over the years...Clinical Guidelines for School Nurses by School Health Alert, Guidelines for School Nursing Documentation by the NASN, School Nrusing Practice Roles and Standards by the NASN, Guidelines For Protecting Confidential Student Health Information by the ASHA, The New School Health Handbook by Jerry Newton MD, and The boston Children's Hospital The New Child Health Encyclopedia... Nurses Day...are you forgotten ?
I usually copy out the page or send the link to all the principals, assistant superintendent (our boss) and our school superintendent. http://www.nasn.org/profession/schoolnurseday.htm Normally this will get us a gift from our principals and our asst. superintendent. :-) Sue

Constant Clinic Visits
At the beginning of every school year I place this article (on colored paper) in every teacher's mailbox. http://www.homestead.com/snp/10.html Ten Things Teachers Can Do To Create Healthy Classrooms written by Gerri Harvey. Incredible article. Also, this is another good one... http://www.homestead.com/snp/FrequentFlyers.html Dealing With Frequent Fliers Hope this helps, Sue

National Certification for School Nurses
HI, Funny to find your post. Certification not required to be a nurse in NY but I just want to take it and have it. On the site they only give you 8 practice questions...I got 2 wrong...was suprised at some of the questions. Can you tell us curious souls about what kind of questions are on the test? And are you paying another $300 to retake it or do they discount it? Does your district pay or did you find funding for it? Thanks in advance.

Teachers...how do they treat you ?
Please keep in mind that we are only a handful of medical professionals in a sea of educators. We need to work hard to gain and keep the respect of those in education. We need to prove ourselves as a key player in the education of students...we know we can. Remember, in the past, the school's main goal was to educate with the "4 R's"...times have changed...social, emotional and health issues play a key factor in a child's ability to learn as well as get an education. Here's a good link to start with: http://www.schoolhealthservicesny.com/uploads/ExploringSchoolNurseRole.pdf and http://www.schoolrn.org/schRn-branded-v2.pdf Sue

Field trips and medicine and diabetics
Funny, I just asked the same question of our NY Statewide School Health Services Administrator (NY state) last week and this was her answer to me: IF the child is considered "Self-Directed"....and administer their own insulin, then a UAP can assist/monitor the student with the blood glucose testing. ONLY a Licensed person, parent, or parent designee (not a school employee) can administer the insulin if the child is NOT self-directed. The law states schools can't keep a student from attending....the field trip might have to be cancelled. Sue

Lunchtime ??
In my district, in upstate NY, the school nurses get 1/2 hour lunch but are PAID for lunch because they recognize that we do need to be on duty. The teachers and secretaries usually respect that it's my lunchtime but of course there's always the emergency injury or illness.

Need salary/benefits/union information UPSTATE NY School Nurses
School nurses in my district in the teachers union (NYSUT) for about 10 years now but do not get any of the teacher benefits. We have different salary, different sick leave accrual, different longevity, no stipends for experience, advanced degree or certification. We feel like the odd relation thrown in a closet and forgotten. I would love some salary and benefit figures from those in the upstate/central NY area as well as what union they are in and any advice you can give. Thank you in advance... Sue Cortland, NY
