Just wanted to know if there are any other students out there who attends a nursing school that uses "The Neighborhood" by Pearson Education. This is an online application.

My school participated in the pilot study last year, so it was free. This year; however, we have had to purchase the code to sign on online. Our cost was about $79. My teachers NEVER referred to the neighborhood families when we were getting it for free. And, to me, its just NOT worth the money. At least with a nursing book, it is yours to keep and refer to later. This is a one time deal. And, what is the difference in the neighborhood and just a regular old case study on paper that your teacher hands out in class and the class discusses.

As you can probaly guess by now, I AM NOT A FAN!!!

Just wondered what others were thinking.............................................

My school started using it during my first semester. We were supposed to read it weekly. First semester, we rarely talked about it in class and we just stopped reading. We were supposed to continue using it during our second semester, but none of our professors every mentioned it in class. Second semester, I didn't even bother logging onto the site. The time to sit there and read the stories was better spent elsewhere. I don't think it's worth the money and I can't believe you are expected to pay to use it.

You are so right when you say "The time to sit there and read the stories was better spent elsewhere". I am in the LPN to RN transition, so my 1st semester (they call it the "transition semester") I logged on once, just to see what it was. Our teacher kept saying that she was going to refer back to the families with each subject matter in class. She never did. Last semester, our OB semester, we used the neighborhood ONCE. Now, my 3rd semester, we had to buy the code for the website. Our instructor said that she was going to use it and "make it worth the money" but we had to buy it ("it's required") because the school had signed a contract with the company. Our class is very upset. Mainly, because we used it twice in 2 semesters (when it was free).

To me, the concept MIGHT would be ok if you didn't have a clinical rotation. But we rotate through about 12 different places. It is nothing more than a case study. And there are plenty of those in all of our other 'required' texts.

Thanks for you response.

we have to use it also and I thought the cost was ridiculous for nothing but access to a web site. with all the other books we had to buy our teacher said she helped come up with the idea so I'm hoping we use it, I hate to waste money on things we don't use!

I don't think it is all that great. I am not impressed, like I said - a simple case study on a piece of paper is just as good

yeah and that would save a bunch of money, we have 45 people in the rn program this year who all had to pay at least 75 dollars for it add it up thats over 3000 dollars for simple case study, which school do you go to nc29mom?

If you ever need anything, I will be glad to help you. Small world, huh? I love this site, it is a great place to just chat or to learn from others.

I was just wondering how many other schools were using the neighborhood.
