Is the school nurse responsible for employees/teachers if they got hurt on the job? Do any of you school nurses have to clean any injuries up on teachers? Had a teacher come by my office asking me did I have anything to rinse her toe off with because she bumped it on the door. I told her the only thing I have is water. I guess she told the principle about her incident and that she came by my office. The office manager informs me that I have to clean any employee's wounds or whatever wrong if they get hurt on the job. Spoke with district nurse she says no that we are only here for the students if any employee gets hurt on the job they have to call this hotline number.

I take care of both students/ employees for things that happen at school that day.

I don't really see the big deal. I would help a staff member who came to my office with an injury. That's just being a good friend/coworker. What good is a toll free number to call if you are bleeding? I mean, anything big, I would obviously insist they go to the ER or clinic, but little things, sure I'll patch them up. I'm a nurse...its what I do :)

Well I just started at the school this year so I don't have friends/coworkers at the school I just stay in my office and assist the kiddos which I guess they are my friends but if a teacher has an emergency I will help but they are adults and I'm sure they know how to put a band aid on themselves as well as ice

Specializes in School Nursing, Pediatrics.

Anything that happens at school on school property to staff or students during school hours, I take care of. Of course, If the cut is small and the adult can do it themselves, I give them the stuff. We document in SNAP that it was a staff member.

I usually help employees with things they need. I will hand them a band-aid if they ask for it. We aren't allowed to rinse student's wound with anything but water so that's all she would've gotten at my school, too.

I check b/p's, monitor chest pains, (sending out if needed), and try to answer any questions I can for my preggo teachers. Mostly because I have been pregnant A LOT recently and I tell them from experience, not necessarily medical advice. And I am always quick to say "but you probably want to call your doctor...".

Either way I help, if it is a small paper cut, okay you get a band-aid. If it something big I have them fill out an employee accident report and possibly WC papers.

But if your boss says no...

As stated above, I'm responsible for any "immediate" medical attention that may be needed. Otherwise I don't have to look at, listen to, or offer an opinion about every cough, ear pain, malady, scrape, pustule, swelling, rash, eye problem, chest pain, bubonic plague symptoms, etc., etc...but I do, because I'm just such a nice SOB.

:yes::roflmao:

Nope. I can only help staff in emergency situations. It was explained that I am here for the students not the staff. I allow them to wash up or grab a bandage but anything greater than that goes to workers comp or I stabilize and send to ER. That's not to say that I don't answer questions from staff but assess and treat them? No.

Specializes in School Nurse, Pediatrics, Surgical.

I am not required to help a staff member but I have taken a BP or helped with dressing if they were not able to due to location. All injuries that need WC go through someone else. I don't deal with those at all.

Specializes in NCSN.
I have to do the workers comp claims and reports for any and all work related injuries. If a staff member came in with a cut on their foot attained at work i can certainly help set them up but would expect that they could clean and put a bandaid on their own toe. If it required more a more skilled dressing, i would certainly assist them. If it's them still wanting something from an injury attained at home, i may note it, but no WC report.

My district is the same as above, but my teachers must be babies because I need to put on their band aids lol

Specializes in CVICU, SchoolRN, MICU, PCU/IMU, ED.

I can assist and have some things but there's a company nurse for anything serious.

I've always told better safe than sorry talk to your MD or go to the ED.

I will try to accommodate staff, not wanting to make any enemies, if I can. If there is a student in the clinic, I would direct the teacher to supplies and the sink. The students take priority.

This is what I do!!! Unless urgent, I will not stop taking care of a student to provide very basic first aid to a staff member. I will talk them through it and show them how they can help themselves to my supplies.

My job description actually specifies that I am to provide medical care for students AND staff, which surprised me. :)
