Had a student come in for something else, then started to tell me she was depressed and how she USED to cut herself, but after her parents found out, they scolded her and she stopped. Now she doesn't feel like she talk to them. So I explained to her she needs to try and I was going to let my AP know about it so she can talk to her and find her some help.

The student was going home after that because she was feeling sick, but I did email my AP. She got upset and told me it was an emergency and I needed to let them know when this happens. I told her I didn't think it was that kind of emergency, but I will do that next time if a child comes in.

You handled the situation really well A.

Admins are extra sensitive about kids who self harm, even if it was in the past.

I had a student come to me with suicidal ideation without plan. I called our youth services board for advice, like you, this was at dismissal, and they said it was an emergency, but cutting is not emergent. Those students rarely contemplate suicide, they just want to "feel". You did the right thing. I suggest you educate the AP in a gentle way.

update: It turned out okay. The kid got help and now is seeing our counselor. She was really happy getting help and came to give me a hug for helping her. AP didn't bother much about it afterwards, so eh.

I think she's sensitive because we had an extreme case this semester where the student ACTUALLY was cutting herself at school and trying to commit suicide at school, so I understand her worry.
