Scholarships for men interested in nursing?

Nurses Men

Published

I am a 34 year old, black, male looking to take nursing around the area of Detroit, Michigan. I want to find scholarships that will pay for the full ride of an ADN and maybe even a stipend for living.

I know of one that was mentioned on here and plan on applying for it but want to find others to hedge my bet. All the nurses at work keep saying "oh yeah being a male and a minority you should be able to get the whole thing paid for and then some!" As much as I keep hearing that I find it difficult to find these programs. Can anyone help?

I did'nt even know there were scholarships available. I could have used them as I got my LPN last July, but am having difficulty paying the loans back already. I'm thinking of going back and getting either an RN or LPN to BSN if possible as I would like to go into management and I already have an associates business degree in accounting. I think my current employer will pay for classes, but I need to work a lot to pay bills, not sure if I can do it...

I wish I could have gotten a minority scholarship, but the only scholarship that was made known was the army/reserves/marine etc.

At my school, the entities wait until your second to last semester in nursing school in order to recruit. Where the hell were you guys when I was struggling to pay for books & etc during my sophmore year?

Unless you are patriotic, drowning in debt and/or don't mind signing your life away, I have no idea why anyone would join that late...

Good luck finding a scholarship...

My advice would be to just take out a pell grant, government loan, or private loan if you can not find a scholarship. After you graduate and start working as a nurse, choose a place that offers tuition reimbursement and/or a sign on bonus.

You may have to sign a contract with a hospital for a few years but at least it's not as long as a commitment with the army. Plus, you can always pay the hospital back, if you decide not to work there.

Im not sure but I think with the army, if called to active duty you can not buy your way out. You pretty much go when Uncle Sam says go! or go directly to jail, do not pass go, do not collect $100.

blackman:

the robery wood johnson foundation and the american association of colleges of nursing have created a program that awards direct entry students at certain programs a $10,000 scholarship for the first year of study. this scholarship is for students who are underrepresented in nursing (men and ethnic minorities).

i see from that site that both oakland and u of detroit mercy have these funds. again, it is restricted for second degree students (those who have an undergraduate degree in something else already).

this year my university was able to award all men and all students of color these $10,000 scholarships in our direct entry clinical nurse leader program.

as you are looking at schools, ask if they have federal funding from the nih for the scholarships for disadvantaged students. this is a federal program for students in health disciplines who are are from backgrounds with economic hardship or environmental hardships. some of the definitions of environmental hardship include graduating from a hs with a large number of reduced/free lunch students, from a school with a less than 40% of graduates going on to college, being a first-generation college attendee, etc. i am the pi (grant writer/award recipeint) for this scholarship at my son. these awards can be applied to tuition. http://bhpr.hrsa.gov/dsa/sds.htm. ask the schools you are considering if they have these sds funds.

it might be tough to get one award to cover everything. but do not be afraid to apply for several of the outside scholarships above. one of my present students gets about $5000 from my office, and has several $1000 awards from other groups as well. any help is good.

even though I didn't start this thread, thanks for the reply...

Since there are few male nurses we tend to think there might not be enough scholarships but that aint true. There are thousands of different nursing scholarships.

If you search Google for male nursing scholarships, you'll see really good sites with many scholarships throughout America.

Here is the few good site with nice scholarships:

1. http://www.malenursingscholarships.com/state-nurse-scholarships/

2. http://www.collegescholarships.org/scholarships/nursing/male.htm
