Good Morning,
Saunders states to massage bony prominences, and NCLEX 3500 states to avoid massaging bony prominences. Can someone please clarify for me. Thank you, I appreciate the help.

Our clinical instructor always told us not to do this. I am not a nurse yet, but my instuctor has 30+ years of experience. How about some advice from those seasoned nurses?

If I remember correctly, both are correct depending on circumstance.
Saunders is correct in saying to massage bony prominances if its not reddened.
NCLEX 3500 is correct in saying not to massage bony prominances if it is reddened.
Hi
Thank you for replying so quickly. The Saunders question only stated to reposition a client every 2 hours and massage bony prominences. I was taught to do this with lotion, as long as skin was not broken down. NCLEX 3500 stated not to massage bony prominences but no ther details. I appreceiate the advice.

You can massage bony prominences IF they are NOT red. If they are red, NO MASSAGE.
Best response for immobilized pt with red area, reposition Q 2 hours and prn.
