First off my name is Stephanie and I'm addicted to buying nursing books! I have Saunders, Prentice hall, Kaplan, Lippincott, the Lacharity book and even more! What I would say is Prentice hall seems to be used alot in my nursing classes, some test questions for med surg and maternity were right out of that book. Saunders to me is a HUGE intimidating book, but is required for my problem solving/NCLEX prep course this fall. So I think they are both good. Then I just have to mention the KAPLAN one as it's a nice normal workbook size. I like that book to just whip out and look at when I'm bored because it doesn't scare me like the phonebook sized Saunders and Prentice.
Wow... and for me Saunders is my light reading, just for fun, to make myself feel smart. I find that Saunders questions are relatively easy compared to other prep books.
I have Prentice Hall, too, and use it for questions, but I find Saunders better for the comprehensive review.
I haven't used Kaplan, but have heard their questions are harder = better prep.
Have you actually looked through each of the books you are considering? Borrow from a friend, or someone who just finished with them to see what works for you. There is no one book that works for everyone.
I don't have an answer for your question--Just a FYI...Saunders has a new edition coming out 10/15/2010
