San Jose State: GPA requirement

Published

Hello,

I'm from Texas. I will apply to San Jose State fall 2009 -BSN.

On the SJSU website, they mention about the minimum GPA 2.5 and "all repeated courses to improve the scored are excluded".

My GPA is 2.8 right now, and I now that it's hard to get in there. But my English was not really good back then when I took Sociology, History, Government.... that why i got all C's. Most of my Math and Biology are As.

Would anyone please give me some advise please?? I would appreciate very much.

Hi Tifa,

I am going to be applying for Spring 2010, I hope I get in. So far my GPA is forecasting to be 3.56 (last 45 qtr units), 3.52 (pre-req), and 3.23 (composite). I am studying for the TEAS now so I am going to take it at least two or three times (just in case a rule is placed on testing limitations.)

Have you started the program? If so, what do you think about it so far.

BTW, I met a young lady who started this Fall; her GPA was 3.3. In addition, she was notified just 3 weeks before the program started; a grant was approved last minute so 10 more students were able to be added to the program, she was one of them. So, I encourage all, who meet the application requirements, to just do it, apply!

hi all,

i just finished my first semester in the nursing program at sjsu (they refer to it as semester 3). i took all my prereqs at sjsu and applied with a 3.9 GPA. if you've taken physiology and micro at sjsu and earned A's in those classes then i believe you will do just fine. personally, the hardest part was just getting into the program! don't get me wrong, the some nursing classes were challenging. plus, all your classmates are super motivated and on top of things. oh, and you will have to spend A LOT of money on vaccinations, CPR certification, drug test, background check, semester fees, equipment (stethoscope, blood pressure cuff, lab materials), and of course textbooks! just be prepared! best of luck to you all!

Hi everybody,

I also just finished the first semester of SJSU's nursing program (like the above poster said, semester 3) and it was difficult but a lot of fun.

As for the GPA requirements, they use an IMPACTION SCORE to calculate acceptance and the maximum score is 12. For the impaction score 12 example, somebody who has a 4.0. in the last 30/45 units, a 4.0 on the 5 science pre-requisites, and a "4.0" on the TEAS (which is your score on the TEAS divided by 25=for example, 100%/25=4.0). They add the 4.0 from the 30/45 units + 4.0 from the 5 science pre-requisites + 4.0 from the TEAS = 12 impaction score. So in essence, each category has equal weight and like the other posters said...if you do bad in one category you can do well in the others to increase your impaction score. The nursing undergraduate coordinators suggest you do really well on your 5 science pre-requisites since those can't really be repeated and are the core knowledge of most of the material for semester 3 (first nursing semester).

I know people in my program who got into our nursing semester with a 9.90 impaction score. Personally, I had a 10.30 (I didn't do to well on my science pre-requisites but got an 89 on my TEAS and a 3.65 overall GPA on my last 30 units). Just try to get as close to a 4.0 as possible and take advantage of taking the TEAS to receive the highest score you can get.

Take care and don't give up on nursing school if it's what you really want!

Thanks everyone for your encouragement. So far I have completed my first course of the A&P series with an A. I have completed chem 30A/B with B's so I am feeling confident. I just need to get an A in micro. Congrats to you both who are in the program. I hope to be there in a year!

thanks so much! I'll be sure to take your advice. And congratulations on getting in!

My GPA is 3.5 up to this semester. How much do i need to score in the TEA exam? can anyone tell me please?

I just started my first semester of nursing at SJSU and so far, it's a lot of work. I like the fact that I'll be with the same students for three years, and we're just having a lot of fun bonding. Pathophysio seems to be the hardest class (don't forget what you learned in anatomy/physio!)

Just an update: the min. gpa is 3.0 for the program, and those with a bachelor's degree are not allowed to apply for the school due to budget cuts. Not sure when this rule will be lifted.

hey all. i graduated from SJSU this past December! Some advice...pay attention to what you learn in Semester 3, especially Patho. It's one of those cornerstone classes that will definitely come in handy later, especially semester 5! G'luck to you all trying to get in and trying to get through the program! 3 years seems like a long time, but before you know it, you'll be finishing sem 8! Believe me!

thanks bebetisha! in your opinion, which hopitals are best for clinicals. i hear that you learn and get the most hands on experience at vmc. is this true? also, how is the job market like for new grads. are your classmates having trouble getting into new grad programs? is it true that they wont allow you to pick which hospital you want to precept at? thanks again!

Specializes in ICU.

i did most of my clinicals at the VA Palo Alto (sems 4/5 med-surg and sem 7 psych at VA Menlo Park). i really liked those facilities. After sem 5 my clinical instructor helped me get a job as a nurse assistant in the ICU. I ended up doing a summer preceptorship on the same unit. and they just hired me as an RN as well. so i'm biased towards the VA for obvious reasons.

i did my peds rotation at VMC and i didn't like it only b/c i don't like peds. however, i've heard from a lot of my classmates that they did a lot at VMC in all rotations. so if you get a good registration date, try for VMC. wherever you end up, just make the most of it and try to get as much experience as you can.

the job market for new grads sucks right now! there aren't many jobs right now. some of my classmates are moving down south and even out of state. if you can get a job at one of the local hospitals during nursing school, do it. most likely they will try to hire you when the time comes. hopefully the market will pick up once your class is getting ready to graduate.

and it's true they don't allow you to pick where you want to precept at. however, they try to place you at hospitals where you have done clinicals at. but that's not always the case (i got placed at o'connor on a ortho/neuro/spine unit).

g'luck to you and feel free to ask me any other questions! :)

hi tmartinez,

can you tell us how hard is nursing program at san jose state? can you share your experience in nursing school such as how you study for your nursing class? Did they kick out many student for making mistake or they give them another chance? How many time can a student retake the class that he failed? I'm sorry for a lot of question. Any info will be great. Thanks in advance.

I'm going to be honest with you. Right now San Jose State turned away over 4,000 applicants. Also if you have a bachelors already that's not even going to help you. They're currently not accepting any 2nd bachelors students. If you live outside of Santa Clara County then don't look into San Jose State. They're now accpeting residents of Santa Clara County only. You can apply, but I'd find another school if possible. Good Luck
