San Jacinto College ADN Fall 2011

Published

Just wanted to start a thread for the Fall 2011 SJC applicants to the ADN Program. I am eagerly awaiting the application period. Have any of you applied to other schools nearby?

oh guitarplayer55...i wonder if you are who i think you are..lol

Don't even bother with this program unless you are 110% commited to this for the next two years. Its completely, in every way possible, different than any of the pre-reqs we have all aced! The testing is different, the scheduling is different, EVERY one of the rules are different. If you're a control freak (like me) than you're going to have a rough time. you have absolutely no control over your schedule!!!! including weekends!!!!! and any time that you are scheduled off is still fair game for them to add a required event at a days notice.

and no, we will not be out for the summer...we have classes! YAY:anpom:

Ditto, mom&studentnurs, and I'm not sure I'm who I thought I was.

Wow, I only wanted to go because it was advertised as only 2 days a week, if it's not like that, I can go somewhere closer to home. I don't understand why they don....oh wait! I'm wondering about the lvn-adn mobility program. I'm so sorry, I must be going crazy.

Can't speak to that.....

yea we are referring to the ADN program.

hello everyone! i'm new to this thread. I just got accepted to the ADN program for the Spring 2012 semester! I was wonder if someone could tell me what their schedule was like for their first semester of nursing. From the previous post I gathered that clinical were either once a week from 6:30am-7:30pm or twice a week from 6:30am-2:30pm. How about the other classes?? Scheduling is a big issue for me as I have a 3 year old son. I need to make arrangement for childcare and I'd like a legit answer whether i'll actually be gone for school all day for 4 or 5 days in the week! I do know that we will receive our schedules during orientation but it is crucial that I find out sooner. Thanks in advance for any feedback! hope every one has a wonderful day! :)

Hi there! I just got in for the Spring and am wondering if anyone has any words of wisdon, heads up, or suggestions for what's to come!

Thanks so much! :D

congratulations! i am currently in the program and can tell you that you will need a babysitter on hand at all times. The first 8 weeks you could be with in the AM or PM classes. AM classes are from 8am-10:50 afternoon class are from 12-2:50 5 days a week. This pretty much your set schedule for the first 8 weeks and is not bad as far as scheduling childcare goes. The second 8 weeks is a totally different story. you'll keep your same schedule on monday as the first 8 weeks and then you'll have a class on t/th which is usually the same as your first 8 weeks (am or pm) but an hour longer and you'll have clinical either w/f which is a 13 hr rotation. Be forewarned that they can call a clinical make up day if there are scheduling issues and your clinical group will be short hours at any time. Im talking a couple of days notice, any day of the week.

Suggestion...just learn to "go with the flow". Professors are very intimidating at first but they do get better...sort of. Be prepared that these classes/professors are not like the prereq classes/professors you are use to. There are no more study guides (even though they call the chapter outlines a "study guide", reviews, things like that...and the tests are no longer "knowledge" based, they are scenarios in which you have to "apply" the knowledge...and get over the 4.0 gpa mindset because you're probably going to lose that pretty quick. Get ready for a huge change in your life and spend lots of time with your family and friends now and warn them that you're starting nursing school because you won't have much time for anything other than NURSING SCHOOL!

GOOD LUCK!

Thanks txSN! Duly noted! :D

txSN is right about everything.... this program is meant for people with 150 % committment, nobody else to take care of including kids, spouse, parents, pets, etc; no job, no obligations (other than nursing school), you MUST have a car or extremely flexible & dependable transportation, plenty of money for supplies & books, or financial aid, HIGHLY recommend a computer/printer/scanner & internet (they sometimes post things on blackboard just hours before class & i've printed over 500 pages since we started in august).

It's a VERY MENTALLY & EMOTIONALLY DEMANDING program... so far most of the instructors seem to flip-flop back and forth from being nice & approachable to looking at you like your an idiot for asking a simple question. Sometimes I wonder if they remember what it was like to be in the program because, unfortunately, some of them can be pretty harsh, SO you've got to develop some tuff skin if you don't already have it.

If you have EXCELLENT time management skills, self discipline, & critical thinking skills... PLUS all of the above... then you most likely won't have any problems in this program. If only some of the things i listed are a problem, then you can most likely succeed, but it won't come with out a lot of stress and sleepless nights.

with that said... good luck & best wishes to all who are already in, & to those that have just been accepted :)

ps... try to have a friend in the program that you can study with, compare notes with, vent to, talk to, cry to, yell to... lol, you get the point... because unless you're in or have been in the program, nobody else really gets it

Thanks for the tips pura_vida! It is really helpful to know some of this prior to beginning. I think it is making it a tad bit easier to mentally prepare myself, and I strongly believe any little bit helps! I totally agree about study/cry on your shoulder/vent/therapist partners! LoL. :D
