SFSU ABSN Summer 2023 Nursing Program

I haven't seen anyone start a thread for SFSU's ABSN program this year. Hoping to connect with people who applied for Summer 2023!

Does anyone know if we need to submit official transcripts to NursingCAS only? Thanks!

@polina11 Wow thank you so much for mentioning the capstone. My longterm goal is nurse midwifery so it sounds like this program wouldn't be ideal.

It's frustrating because I want to come back to the Bay Area after to work so I'd love to get a sense of the local hospitals and build relationships there, but the more you talk about it the more turned off I am. Oof

I have a classmate who was initially pursuing midwifery and has worked as a doula in the Bay Area. I'm not sure if that is still her goal but I can try to connect you with her if you're interested in asking her more specific questions.

I've invited my classmates to hop in here and offer their advice or answers to your questions. Hope you guys don't mind. For those of you who get accepted and choose to attend, you will also get a student-led orientation in addition to your official program orientation, so you will get a lot of info then too.

has anyone heard a decision yet?

No decision yet. I talked with the graduate studies and they said it still looks like my application is under review. I contacted SFSU nursing and they said decisions will be released mid-April which is so late. :/

Hi Hannah, I am happy to talk offline about pursuing midwifery in the bay ([email protected]).  If you want my opinion, I think if your goal is to be a CNM, I would just go straight into a direct-entry CNM program. It will save you some time and then you can guarantee your wanted specialty. Email me and we can chat more details.

Thank you so much!! Couple more questions -

• Did anyone work part time while in the program, and if so, did they survive? LOL

• Are the odds pretty good of getting hired at a clinical site if you make a good impression?

• Were clinicals ever night shifts?

• Were most people local, or did some people move to the bay for this program?

Thanks Polina for letting us know about this thread. I am also currently in the SFSU ABSN program and relied heavily on AllNurses before I got in so happy to answer questions. I think Polina did a great job addressing a lot of the questions already but I will provide a bit more context for some.

Yes, I have been working 20 hrs/week throughout the program. I was worried about how I would be able to balance everything before I started but it actually hasn't been that bad. If you have good time management skills and are OK studying in the evenings after class/clinical, you'll be fine. It does help if you can work remotely or have the flexibility to set your own hours because clinical/class schedules change every semester.

Someone asked about carpooling.

This was one of the most stressful things for me at the beginning because I don't drive and live in the East Bay. I wasn't sure how I was going to get all the way to San Mateo and my clinicals. However, I actually connected with a few people through AllNurses and then the Discord chat and had everything worked out before classes started. About a third of us currently live in the East Bay and we carpool to class and clinicals, which saves on time and money. Highly recommend!

Current ABSN student here. Last year, we heard back on April 3 so it should be any day now. Good luck to all of you!

Thank you to all the current students that have hopped on to answer questions or give advice! You guys are greatly appreciated :,)

Does anyone the cost of tuition for the program? I vaguely calculated the cost based on amount of credits and $ per credit, which came to around 38k. Not sure how much fees, etc. come out to.

That sounds about right. Don't forget the approximately $2,700 you have to pay for ATI. But it's split into 4 payments, 1 each semester.

Thanks so much to all the people contributing with such great questions and answers! This forum is super helpful.

Could any current students share how you are currently taking notes for classes? Have you found it better to use a laptop vs. iPad? Do you get PowerPoint slides and take notes there? Just curious about the system that has worked best for you all based on the material that is distributed. Any tools you found particularly helpful and recommend students to get?
